Newbie - Another One

Hi there everyone.

Celiac.com Sponsor (A13):

As titled, I'm totally new to this and reading more and more entries and starting to feel panicked. I've been trying to go gluten free for two months and have not found much improvement other than that my condition is now manageable - ie: I can go back to work and be with friends. I'm still tired and often cloudy and not sure what sets that off.

I'm now noticing that I should be looking at soaps, shampoos, dish soap and the like? Is this true if we're not ingesting shampoo or body soap? Is there really enough dishsoap left on the dishes to make a difference? What about using the same toaster as my roomate who of course, uses wheat breads?

The worst part of all this is I hate cooking and really have no idea where to start! Is it true we can never really eat out again? What about friend's places and their "old wooden spoons" ? Do i really need to wipe keyboards with alcohol to ensure there's no gluten anywhere from a previous user?

And last, but not least, what about dating? If my boyfriend has just had pasta - can I kiss him?! Do we need to use a condom if he's not gluten free? (don't laugh - I have no idea!) Should I ask him to change his soap?

Please advise... looking for answers and support..

Thank you...

Personally, I don't worry about soaps, shampoos, etc. If you don't ingest it, you shouldn't have a problem. The gluten damages the villi in the intestines and how can it do that unless it gets into the intestines? Not gonna happen if it just gets on your skin. However, if you happen to have it, say, under your fingernails, then put it in your mouth, it could happen that way.

You should have your own toaster and don't let anyone else put regular bread into it.

It is not true that we can't eat out. I eat out frequently. Some restaurants have gluten-free menus. You usually still have to quiz and inform your server and/or the chef, but it is not that difficult to get a gluten-free meal at a restaurant.

I've never heard of anyone wiping the keyboard off before touching it for fear of gluten. You aren't going to be licking the keyboard are you?

Also, as far as I know, gluten is not transferred by kissing, and definitely not by having sex (although, many other far nastier diseases are).

Don't panic. It's not that bad, not so difficult once you get used to it. You'll just learn as you go along.

I am curious about my Wheat-gem infused shampoo. As far as cooking goes - learn. It is not that hard and often fun. I am now in love with my George Forman grill. I do steaks and pork or chicken. Then I put on some asparagus and onions or green or red peppers and there are few things better than grilled veggies. I am largly on a paleolythic diet except I have learned to use fire (caveman joke). I'm sorry you are a little afraid, but here is the upside. I've got more muscle than I've ever had, guns, pects and abs (when I'm not bloated) and I NEVER work out. Email if you would like to talk further.
