Needing a "Heads Up" on Headaches

I am now collecting information, research, articles, professional papers, and especially, patient stories, for a new project. Many people with food sensitivities and with celiac disease suffer from headaches, or have family members who do. I would love to hear from anyone with an interesting headache "case history" they're be willing to share confidentially, and from...

The Link Between Celiac Disease and Bladder Problems Becomes Clearer

For the past two years I've been busy writing something called, "The Better Bladder Book - A Holistic Approach to Healing Interstitial Cystitis & Chronic Pelvic Pain". IT is now OUT, AVAILABLE, and thankfully, getting GREAT Reviews! This makes me very happy, not because I'll make a bundle (I won't), but because people who need help can now find it. IC is a terrible disease affecting up to...

The Chronic Prostatitis and Celiac Disease Connection

I'm writing a book about the bladder, and one of the points I came across in my research, perhaps not too surprisingly, is a link between gluten intolerance and/or celiac disease and chronic prostatitis in men.  I've also run across a comment posted regarding this link on the gluten-free forum on this site, but I really want to learn more about this link to document it for the book.  So, what I...

Celiac Disease on NPR June 15, 2009

Did anyone catch the early morning news on NPR yesterday?  I turned it on in the middle of a very good piece on a family with celiac disease.  The focus was on the recent diagnosis of a 15-year old boy.  He was active in sports and had intermittent symptoms, until one day, they became constant and fairly severe. He was diagnosed fairly quickly, and responded well to a gluten free diet.  In fac...

Update on a Celiac Disease and Parkinson's Disease Link

I've been very interested in reading the responses to the previous blog discussing whether there could be a link between celiac disease or gluten intolerance and Parkinson's disease.  There still is not any clinical information linking these two disorders.  Many people do feel there is some connection, or in some cases, gluten-sensitivity driven neurological symptoms have lead to being misdiagnosed w...

Is there a link between Parkinson's Disease and Gluten Intolerance/Celiac Disease?

I caught a spot on Oprah today with the actor Michael J. Fox discussing his battle with the neurological symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. He's always been an engaging persona, and I enjoyed the segment. As a nurse, I've always had a strong interest in neurological disorders, and have done a lot of reading on the links between Celiac disease and neurological disorders, especially gluten ataxia...

Surviving Gluten-Free Holiday Travel

I've just returned from a week in California, visiting three sets of relatives, and enjoying a Thanksgiving meal for eighteen people.  It was a great experience seeing people we hadn't seen for many years in the beautiful mountains near Big Bear Lake.  We also spent time with family near San Diego, and as a special treat, went hiking in Torey Pines State Park.  After spending six days away fr...

Feedback for: When Mistakes Happen, Focus on Comfort

Hello all you Celiacs, I posted the article, "When Mistakes Happen, Focus on Comfort", with the best of intentions, but the feedback has been pretty controversial, taking me completely by surprise.  Obviously these recommendations are not going to help everyone.  Anyone who knows anything about Celiac Disease knows that the array of possible symptoms varies tremendously.  I am also unhappy th...

M.Y.O.B. vs the Desire to Help: Does Concern Ever Win Over Respecting Privacy?

As a Celiac Disease/Gluten Intolerance Nurse/Educator,  I help people regain their health by learning to follow a gluten-free diet.  In doing so over time I have become so familiar with every manifestation of Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivity that I can often recognize symptoms in people at a glance.   Perhaps you can too.  You know, the fair-skinned Celtic or blond Nordic types, with a b...

Interstitial Cystitis and Gluten Intolerance

I have to admit to being overwhelmed with the response to the article on Gluten Sensitivity and Bladder Disease.  Thanks to everyone who wrote in, here and to me personally.  The article has been picked up not only by Celiac sites, but by sites that support people who have Intersititial Cystitis, and that honestly thrills me, because it doubles the number of people who have the potential to g...

Farmer's Market Response to Gluten-Free Demonstration

I did my first two farmer's market demonstrations this week.  Here's what happened.  In Lake Oswego on Saturday, Sept. 6th, I woke early and carted all my stuff to the market, set up, and proceeded to make gluten-free waffles, with fresh peach sauce and coconut cream - gluten, dairy, and sugar free.  They were yummy.  I also made some chocolate chip waffles for the kids.  While I spoke a litt...
