Need Some Help

So my best friend is a deaf communications major and to get into this program she needs to sign and introduction to herself. And she wants to include something about Celiac because it will be easier to understand in ASL for the deaf than written words... Only problem is she can't find ANY signs for wheat, rice, etc. And I'm thinking there HAS to be someone out there with celiac disease that knows ASL...

Any body got any ideas? Because I would appreciate them a lot!

I sign for a learning disabled hearing impaired student at a middle school. I went to school to learn ASL, but she is more used to signed english. Wheat is signed like 'bread', with the dominant hand a 'w'. Rice is like 'soup', using an 'r' for the dominant hand. But I wouldn't use those if the people she is signing to are strictly ASL.

I couldn't find any signs for those in any of my ASL resources, and I haven't been involved in the Deaf community for some time, so there's noone I can ask. Her best bet would be to fingerspell. In fact, one of my websites shows to fingerspell 'rice'. There simply is not always a sign for every word.

Sorry, that's the best I can do. Is there someone she can ask?

Thanks! It's some help. I'm working on asking a handful of other people involved in the Deaf community too, but no one so far seems to have any suggestions besides to fingerspell them. I may just fingerspell them and then use the signs you mentioned you did above, but I'm not sure yet. Thanks for the help and the ideas! It's not that I can't explain what celiac disease is, it's just that I'm a little more limited in the vocabulary I can use to explain it to Deaf friends in ASL in a way that makes sense to them.

      Terrible Neurological Symptoms

      Oddly this effect has gone now, just happened yesterday evening, the nerve pain is now back to its usual "unpredictable" random self again - but that was the only time I ever had some mechanical trigger for it, don't know why! There's no (or wasn't) actual pain in my neck - it was inside the leg, but when I looked down, now though, the leg pain just comes...

      I had MRI scan a few years ago showing everything normal, and now it's no longer triggering the nerve pain when I bow my head today - it only seemed to happen yesterday, and that was the only time it happened! Just seemed weird as no movement has caused my usual nerve pain before. It's normally just random.

      Very good pizzeria with small dining room in back of the restaurant. The owner's daughter has celiac & they have gluten free pizza & a gluten free menu. Some items from the regular menu can be made gluten free also. They have a lunch menu which we ordered from & my chicken with spinach & mozzarella over gluten-free penne was delicious...

      Celiac flare years after diagnosis

      @Aretaeus Cappadocia and @Russ H thank you both for your helpful advice and information. I haven't seen a GI in years. They never helped me aside from my inital diagnosis. All other help has come from my own research, which is why I came here. I will be even more careful in the future.

If you have access to decent healthcare, I would write down your experiences and questions in outline form and bring this to your Dr. I suggest writing it down so you don't get distracted from telling the Dr everything you want to say while you have their attention.
