In my relentless search to try to figure out my issue a few years ago, after trying a bunch of different exclusion diets in addition to gluten-free (soy, corn, dairy, nightshade vegetables, refined sugars, etc) I tried FODMAPs. It was more difficult than any of the other diets only in the sense that keeping all of the rules in your head is pretty hard. But...

ARCHIVED Anyone Else With Abdominal Migraine/cyclic Vomiting Syndrome?
Sinenox posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I haven't posted here in years, but I thought others might have the same problem so I wanted to throw this out there. This isn't a better diagnosis by any means, but it might make sense for some with atypical experiences like mine. I have been sick since I was a teen, went from being a competitive athlete to unable to run for a few minutes without feeling...- 3 replies

ARCHIVED gluten-free Birth Control Pill?
Sinenox replied to teamworkjr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I confirmed with a chemist at Watson Pharmaceuticals that Reclipsen is gluten-free as well. It uses corn-based starches as filler. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Prescriptions (birth- Control)
Sinenox replied to Grace Maureen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi there, Watson Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Reclipsen, is hard to pin down. I had to call them a few times, but I was routed to their laboratory, where I spoke to two technicians named Brendan and Andrew. They both confirmed that there are no gluten ingredients in Reclipsen, and that the starches used are based in corn. To the OP: Reclipsen... -
My partner was recently diagnosed with narcolepsy, which is currently considered an autoimmune condition as well, and many people on the Narcolepsy Network report doing better after going gluten free. I mention this because the only condition in which it is common to "hear voices", besides schizophrenia, is narcolepsy. You may want to ask your doctor about...

I can see how that would be confusing. So I was sent to Italy for my career and I was in this one area for a month. I was "forced" to eat gluten because I could not avoid it in the food I ate there. There was not gluten free food available. Even the salads I would order had cross contamination issues like crazy. Them's the facts. That part had nothing to...

My experience with this has been that no matter how it's down-played, your failure to eat exactly what everyone else is eating is the source of that attention. In a tight-knit competitive atmosphere where you don't control your own schedule, there just isn't any getting around it. That bit about being the quota-filler is interesting! I've never even considered...

I am in an environment very much like that described above and unfortunately "suck it up" doesn't tend to apply where social gatherings of this nature are concerned, at least for some of us. Going out and not eating is great - but can you do it twice a day and eat in your office without people taking exception? Many of us are too young to rent a car and often...

Thanks for all of the replies, guys. It's not an issue of making excuses or of wanting to eat gluten - I can assure you that I learned quite viscerally how bad the gluten was for me, long ago. I am eager to get back to my completely gluten-free lifestyle. I even got an ulcer over all of this stress about eating the gluten again. I desperately want to be...

ARCHIVED Support Group In Enfield, Connecticut
Sinenox replied to Kat25's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We're starting a biweekly support group in New Haven. You're welcome to come though it may be too far for you to reasonably drive. Aiming for a start date in December. -
I may be really sensitive but I didn't get over the continuous low-level "yuck" feeling until I gave in to replacing everything and using exclusively my own new stuff - including non-scratched and non-porous materials such as baking sheets, plates and cutlery, plastic tupperware, etc. Just my two-cents.

I've been gluten free for a few years. I was quite strict in the beginning, felt out my boundaries, realized how much I could be hurting myself and took only calculated risks. This last summer I spent a couple of months in rural Tuscany. I don't travel the way most people do - so all of that nonsense about how great Italy is for Celiacs was just that. If...

ARCHIVED Is Rice Dream gluten-free Rice Milk Really gluten-free Now?
Sinenox replied to Gwen B's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My understanding was that Rice Dream was at the lower threshold of what can be tested. If that's the case, what is to say that any of the other milks could be considered better? How can we be sure that they aren't processed with/exposed to gluten? -
It really is a rollercoaster ride. It's even harder to remember that when you feel great 3 months in and then crummy 1.5 years in, yet again. It takes time. This was the very hardest part for me - accepting that yes, it really was going to take more than 2 years for me to feel truly better. It was particularly hard because there were a lot of inexplicable...

Hello. I have just moved in to New Haven to start a PhD as well. I have found the local restaurants sorely lacking, unfortunately. I would love to get together with other local celiacs (particularly other grad students) to cook and discuss. Let me know when you get into town. I would be happy to help to organize something a little more formal as well, if...

ARCHIVED Facial Moisturizers & Public Soap
Sinenox replied to grey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe you're overreacting to the poster. It's a valid question that they're asking and not one that pertains at all to topical reactions. They're simply trying to get at the heart of whether common bathroom soaps (the sort that you encounter in public restrooms) often contain gluten and how to recognize them. Your vitriol was not warranted. -
ARCHIVED College Student Recently Diagnosed With celiac disease
Sinenox replied to BlackburnK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
DarkIvy had a lot of really good information. I just wanted to point out that I actually have had a difficult time with sushi in my area. A lot of rolls contain fried ingredients, almost all crab is imitation crab meat (mostly gluten) and as she mentioned, nearly all of the sauces contain soy sauce, most brands of which list wheat above soy in the ingredients... -
ARCHIVED College Student Recently Diagnosed With celiac disease
Sinenox replied to BlackburnK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey, I was also diagnosed in college. You're not alone, though sometimes it certainly feels that way. Susanna gave some really great advice. I wish I'd gotten that advice when I was first on the diet. It was hard to me to admit that this was a difficult thing, especially because no one around me could begin to understand. I'd always been a foodie, so... -
I have no real input. I just wanted to say that it really picks me up to read stories like these, particularly as someone who hasn't reached the plateau yet. I still wake up some days wanting to break with the diet or needing to remind myself that "food is not for pleasure anymore". These stories give me some hope, even if the circumstances aren't always...

I was very sad when I discovered that Rice Dream wasn't fully gluten-free, not only because I had naively been using it during my elimination diet phase, but also because I vastly preferred the taste of their product over the others that were available. I tried Blue Diamond and a number of other brands of Hemp, Almond and various other nutty or rice milks...

ARCHIVED Vitamin Supplements
Sinenox replied to BigRog's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have found a fantastic new source of vitamins! They are guaranteed to break down within half an hour, they don't contain any petroleum or animal byproducts, they don't contain ingredients that interact with eachother and prevent absorption and best of all, they're gluten free! They're made to supplement the diets of either men or women, but they also have... -
Yeah, the more I have the more it seems to be the brain fog. I was nearly diagnosed with dyslexia as a child, as I would see and transcribe letters very strangely, and as I mentioned my relatives have some dyslexia, but it seems to ebb and flow. The two year benchmark gives me something to hold on to, I guess. No one has ever given me anything like a timeline...

ARCHIVED Healing Crisis?
Sinenox replied to aquamarine-queen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey AQ, When I first stopped the gluten this past autumn the exact same thing happened to me! When I asked my doctor about it, he kind of shrugged and said that it was all probably stress related. I was concerned, foremost because the symptom that tipped them off was immunesuppression, and my lymph nodes and other glands would get swollen whenever... -
ARCHIVED Any "safe" Restaurants In San Jose Area?
Sinenox replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
There is a place called "The Soka Kitchen" Socca? Anyway I don't quite remember, but though it has a limited menu it is completely 100% gluten free, soy free, dairy free, and free of a lot of other things as well. Made while you wait. Great food! Good luck. I imagine the Bay Area is one of the easiest places to find gluten-free food in. -
This is my very favorite sandwich joint of all time. I've been there a number of times since I've been diagnosed and there just isn't anything safe. I can practically assure you. I'm sorry.
