  1. Lara Bars are gluten free and soy free! Some flavors taste better than others though.. you have to experiment with them all.
  2. I'm also a college student... living in the dorms... haha no fun at all... but yes, it is really hard. People don't understand.. and ah yes the "you can't have beer? oh my god how do you survive" is common..i've come across people who are supportive and understanding.. but some people just do not get it.. and its completely normal to feel helpless and hurt. if you ever want to talk, just let me know!
  3. I received an e-mail today from the National Restaurant Association (I get them regularly for a class I'm taking).. and one of the topics is a gluten free webinar... "Free NRA webinar delivers gluten-free options Join the National Restaurant Association for a free webinar titled Boosting Customer Loyalty With Gluten-Free Options, scheduled for 2 p.m. ET April 29. Guest speaker Nancy Baker, education director for the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, West Coast Office, will demonstrate how to serve customers who require gluten-free items, while growing your business. Register today to learn more about celiac disease and gluten-free options. " I'm not sure if anyone is interested but I thought I'd pass it along! if you go to nrameetings.webex.com you should be able to find it, its titled Boosting Customer Loyalty with Gluten-Free Options ... also you may want to try the National Restaurant Association main page Enjoy!
  4. this isn't really breakfast, but what my mom does with quinoa is put like veggies, feta cheese, you could do meat too i guess... and then she puts a poppyseed dressing and mixes it all up.. and its really not that bad at all.. i just dont like the blandness quinoa has to offer so i think the key is the dressing or the sauce you put on it
  5. Babycakes Bakery is in NYC.. I'm not sure if they do Wedding Cakes.. but their cupcakes are so good! www.babycakesnyc.com
  6. So I made this late last night.. and left it on the counter to cool, needless to say this morning when I came downstairs, most of it was gone! hahaha My gluten eating father devoured it!! So thanks! Great recipe!!
  7. Very cool website! I noticed you quoted me on Dinitz cafe ... I'm glad they made it on the list, they treated me very well!
  8. I just watched the movie Sydney White with Amanda Bynes.. and they had a gluten free conversation! I had to tell someone, and I figured you would all get just as excited as I was. They were at a cookout, and Sydney reassured her friend that they had a separate gluten free soy burger for him! Another girl overheard and was like ohh do you have another one? He responded, "your gluten free too??" and she replied, "yes! my whole life! it can be so hard!" hahah I was like beaming!!
  9. For the most part I have gotten 100% support. My mom was on board day one... we went to NYC with my family and she was like were eating at gluten free restaurants for every meal.. haha... friends that saw me pre-gluten free being so sick are supportive. But I'm having issues with my college roommate, she doesn't understand why I'm so strict, or if I question something why I won't eat it. I'm not one to talk about this disease, or make people go out of their way to accommodate me... and 99% of the time I am positive cause I have gotten so much better on this diet. The only times recently I've been frustrated is with her. She's my best friend, I'm not asking her to go gluten free (I've never made her try my food).... and I know its not her disease and thats why she doesn't get it, but would still like some support.
  10. I'm taking a food service class, and we had to sign up for weekly newsletters about the restaurant industry.. and imagine my excitement when I read it today! And article about gluten free dining!! http://www.sltrib.com/ci_8452854
  11. I know exactly what you mean, I had a friend who died two months ago from cancer. But she was one of the most beauitful, inspiring people you would ever meet. She would be in the hospital undergoing chemo sending me care packages of gluten free food! And I would call her and be like thank you so much but really focus on yourself! Let me send you care packages! And she would always protest and start to tell me the new gluten free thing she found.. so in the grand scheme of things, having to pass on cookies isn't so bad.
  12. I am in college during the school year... but am from Hull, MA! If a support group does get started around the Boston area... let me know!
  13. I live in a dorm too... so I can understand your frustration... it is hard, not impossible but hard. If you talk to your dining hall they might be able to provide gluten free options, I ended up getting out of my meal plan cause things just weren't working out. But its worth a talk with the nutritionist/chef at your school because they can probably help you. My best friend is the microwave haha, I eat a lot of frozen dinners Amy's brand (you can buy them at Whole Foods) makes gluten free mac and cheese, enchiladas, some mexican dishes. As for bread... it needs to be toasted! haha Sometime's I'll even toast it so its burnt then it will hold tuna, peanut butter, etc. Also, Lundberg Farms makes a really great Risotto which can be microwaved. I eat a lot of fruits, veggies, and salad... but be careful of the dressings if you eat at the dining hall, as many dressings contain gluten. Against the Grain (also found at whole foods) makes a really good bagel! or at least I liked it.. its soft and chewy and can be heated up in the microwave. Yoplait yogurt is also gluten free, Glutino and the Gluten free pantry make really good cookies. Good-luck!! It definitely gets easier!
  14. I'm not sure if you have a Whole Foods near you... but in the frozen section, Kettle Soups just came out with a bunch of gluten free flavors! Clam Chowder, Chicken and Rice Noodle, Chili.. there all really good!! Just make sure your buying the one with "gluten free" on the box.. cause they make gluten containing soups as well.
