I don't know about allergies, but when it comes to intolerances and sensitivities, it's perfectly understandable why more of them would appear after giving up gluten. One must keep in mind that certain minerals are required for the production of certain enzymes. After a dramatic change of diet, it's quite understandable that you may develop deficiencies you...

ARCHIVED Non-aluminum Dedorant
Arlek replied to sdore's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This may come as a surprise to everyone, but those crystal deodorants that say they're made out of mineral salts are generally made out of 100% alum (despite the fact that they list mineral salts as a separate ingredient). Alum actually is a mineral salt -
ARCHIVED Vending Machine Suggestions
Arlek posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They're switching vending machines companies where I work. They're calling for suggestions on what they should carry. I came up with a list, but it's mostly just candy. Any ideas? (You can mention candy, too.) -

ARCHIVED Popcorn And Gluten?
Arlek replied to MrMark's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm surprised no one has mentioned cross-contamination. From what I understand, this is fairly common with plain popcorn (not microwaved). Correct me if I'm wrong there. The only two kinds I've checked on were cross-contaminated, anyway. Let me know of any that aren't. I'm still looking. Also, from what I understand, many corn tortillas are also either... -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter
Arlek replied to sdore's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I decided to ask Adam's myself, and guess what? They replied within like 20 minutes (via phone message). I'm glad to tell you all that they say all of their peanut butters are definitely gluten-free and that there is no risk of cross-contamination (they only deal in their peanut butters in their facility apparently). I asked about chemicals for the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Baking Mixes (tip)
Arlek posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I emailed Simply Organic about their turkey gravy, since my local grocery store had it in the gluten-free section, and I bought it without realizing it didn't say it was gluten-free. Anyway, the gravy has risk of cross-contamination, they told me, although they say they do have full ingredient disclosure on their products. However, they told me about several... -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter
Arlek replied to sdore's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would still be cautious about natural peanut butters. I say this simply because most peanuts (not peanut butters) I've read about are contaminated, or potentially contaminated, with wheat in the processing (i.e. such as Planters, whether salted or not, nutsonline peanuts, and the Walmart brand). Who's to say they don't use the same methods for the peanuts... -
ARCHIVED New Thing With Lentils (similar To Tofu, But Easy To Make)
Arlek posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've already posted this elsewhere, so I'll point you to my link to avoid redundancy and potential copyright issues (seeing as I don't know Celiac.com's policy on that, yet—some sites claim exclusive rights over post-content, and that could restrict someone from reposting or using it elsewhere; I certainly want normal people to do whatever they want with i... -

How did you use the oil and extract? I'm curious. -

You could always do product searches for the specific bacteria found in Threelac, and hope they're gluten-free -
ARCHIVED Threelac/grapefruit Seed
Arlek replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Finally found the site I was talking about again. Here's what it says for Threelac: " Other Ingredients: Micro-Crystalline Cellulose, Refined Dry Beer yeast Powder, Gelatin, Canola Oil, Silica, Caramel, Titanium Dioxide. Contains ingredients derived from milk and wheat (Milk Protein 4 ppm; gluten 30 ppm) " So, it has 30 ppm of gluten. Here's... -
ARCHIVED Threelac/grapefruit Seed
Arlek replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've never used Threelac, but after researching it, today, according to one website it looks like it has gluten in it (or maybe it said something was derived from something with gluten in it; not sure which). Other sites, however, say that it's gluten-free. Kind of confusing. That might be what's causing the problems, though. It's worth a thought. It could... -
ARCHIVED Apple Juice...anyone?
Arlek replied to outthere39's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Still, though, if there are enough enzymes applied to the juice before it gets to the liver, it shouldn't matter if there is a deficiency in the liver (since there won't be any fructose left by then). I'm not saying that this is an ideal situation, as there might be consequences to using those enzymes in such abundance, though. Now, what if they actually... -

ARCHIVED Digestion Problems With Amaranth?
Arlek replied to Live2BWell's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmm, thanks for the information. Previously, I got some amaranth and cooked it in a rice cooker. It tasted pretty good and all. It made me feel great. However, it came out rather quickly, and lots of the seeds were still visible in the bowel movement. This had me concerned, of course. I figured maybe grinding it into flour would help, but I haven't tried... -
ARCHIVED Apple Juice...anyone?
Arlek replied to outthere39's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ah, thanks for the information. That helps a lot. None of mine list natural flavors or the like. I've mostly been getting the Western Family kind. -
ARCHIVED Apple Juice...anyone?
Arlek replied to outthere39's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmm. If it's an issue with digesting fructose, shouldn't one be able to take certain enzymes to temporarily remove the problem, such as with lactase for lactose? I've never heard of fructase, but there has to be some enzyme or other that will break down fructose. Taking that would seem to help one identify if this is the problem. Any ideas on what the enzyme... -
ARCHIVED Apple Juice...anyone?
Arlek replied to outthere39's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So, I'm really curious: which brands of apple juice are *not* gluten-free? Do they list any gluten products in the ingredients? I've never seen apple juice that listed gluten-containing products in the ingredients. So, I want to know if gluten-free is the exception, or if gluten is the exception. -
ARCHIVED Apple Juice...anyone?
Arlek replied to outthere39's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You asked if anyone else has had reactions to apple juice. Well, I don't think it's a gluten issue, but I have noticed that apple juice has several interesting affects on me. Over all, I'm not sure if it's good or bad (but from what I can tell, it seems a little of both). Apple juice does seem to make me constipated. Perhaps constipation isn't the right... -

ARCHIVED Kingsford Corn Starch
Arlek posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Is Kingsford Corn Starch free of gluten contaminants? I know the company (Argo) says that argo corn starch is gluten free, but I don't know if that only applies to their corn starch labeled as Argo or not. Any insights? -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have Issues With Food Coloring?
Arlek replied to jjc's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What are the ingredients in the wafers? I know Swedish Fish have mineral oil in them. It can act as a laxative, I hear (although you'd probably have to eat a lot of Swedish Fish for that). As far as food coloring goes, long before I had any suspicions about gluten, I found that certain food colorings affected me in certain ways, although it's hard to... -
ARCHIVED 100 (or More) Things To Do When You Are Glutened
Arlek replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is kind of off topic, but … I think I might actually have a celery intolerance (at least with the seeds), although that's in addition to gluten issues, I fear. I think I'll go find out (although maybe that's not such a great idea). I don't have anywhere I have to be for the rest of the day, though. All I know is something in a gluten-free (... -
