  1. i have struggled with chronic nausea and other GI issues for 23 years. No doctor could ever figure out what was causing it. About 8 years ago a new doctor I saw felt strongly that it was Celiac. My blood test was negative but she was so sure it was Celiac that she sent me for an endoscopy. The GI doctor I saw was a jerk and told me that if the blood test was negative then that meant I didn't have it. He did the endoscopy but didn't test me for Celiac. When my regular doctor got the results and saw that the GI doc didn't look for Celiac she was beyond upset. She sent me for a DNA test. My DNA test showed that I do have the gene for Celiac. She stated that although that doesn't mean I for sure have the disease that for her it confirmed that I had it. I went gluten free for 8 months but didn't feel much of a difference. Because I didn't test positive in the blood test and because I didn't feel better on the diet I denied the diagnosis. Here I am 8 years later and I just keep getting more sick as time goes on. I started seeing a new doctor and he mentioned Celiac without knowing my history. I told him the above story and he didn't seam to have an opinion about it. Well I recently did a food sensitivity test. I am only sensitive to 3 foods: Gluten, Wheat, Bran. This had me questioning the Celiac diagnosis. Now I'm wondering if I really do have it. I see the doc on Tuesday and am thinking of asking him to do the blood test. Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on this. I know a sensitivity does not mean Celiac. I just found it coincidental that my highest sensitivity is to gluten.
  2. It was never confirmed that I had Celiac. My doctor thought it was what I had, however the blood tests came back negative and the doctor that did my endoscopy was a jerk and didn't feel I had it so he didn't test for it. I did have the blood test for the gene done and I do have the gene. I did do an elimination diet for about 3 months. I found it so hard and because I didn't have concrete proof that this is what I had I failed at the diet. I have still been having all of my old digestive issues, however today something new started. I started having this intense stinging sensation on the sensitive skin area of my upper arms. It feels like needles poking my skin x100. It is a little red but there are no blisters. There are a few small red bumps but it doesn't look like a rash. Everytime anything touches my skin in that area the stinging is so intense. Even when nothing is touching my skin I am still having the pain. Has anyone else experienced this or know what this could be. It is driving me crazy and I'm in a lot of pain. I am also having discomfort in my lower abdomen.
  3. Thanks for the tip on making the pizza crust thinner. I did check on their website and King Arthur Flours says they have a dedicated gluten free facility. It also says they are certified by the GFCO.
  4. I just made gluten free pizza on Saturday night and it was so yummy. I used a boxed pizza crust mix from www.kingarthurflour.com . They have just started making gluten free products and so far their stuff has been so tasty. The crust was so good. It was a little hard to make because of the doughs consistency. It's a sticky paste and is very hard to thin out when making the pizza. So our crust was a little thick but I was surprised how good it was. My husband and sister-in-law who are not gluten free ate it and loved it. The only negative is that we put the leftovers in the fridge and the next day the crust was really crumbly and not very good. Which I find seems to be a problem with a lot of the gluten free baked items that I make, but when eaten fresh out of the oven it's so good.
  5. I have been gluten free for 2 months now and my constipation has cleared up completely. I too had a doctor do an xray and tell me she saw that I was full of stool. I was living in Hawaii at the time and went to a family friend who gave me a lomi lomi massage. He did the massage on my tummy and when he was massaging my lower right side of my tummy we could hear a bunch of gurgling. He told me that I would probably pass a lot of gas on the ride home however nothing happened that night. Then the next day I spent the day in the bathroom. When I went back to the doctor she asked what I took to get everything out. I told her about the massage and she said that wasn't possible. But honestly I did not take anything and I don't think it was just a coincidence that it cleared up within 12 hours of getting the lomi lomi massage. By the way these were the doctors who had been telling me since I was a kid that my symptoms were all in my head. Any way just thought I would share that story. If anyone has access to someone who knows lomi lomi it definitely helps when things get very backed up. Sorry SLB to hear about all your allergies. I can't imagine having to figure out how not to eat so many things. Gluten has been so tough for me, compared to what you have to go through I feel lucky that I only have one food sensitivity. I hate that people think it is so easy to give up a food let alone a number of foods. I wish you the best of luck. I think you will be overwhelmed at first but in no time you will be a pro at figuring out what you can and can't eat.
  6. I am definitely going to switch their food to gluten free. I talked to my Doctor about this, this afternoon and she doesn't think that it's a problem for me. After talking with her I realized that I have had improvements in my health since starting the diet. I haven't had acid reflux for weeks now and my constipation has cleared up completely. I guess I didn't notice because I am still having the nausea which is my biggest complaint. She reminded me that it's going to take a while to feel better all over since I have been damaged for so long. I am just being impatient about it. I'm glad I found out about the wheat in dog food. I love my dogs so much and want them to be with me forever, so if changing their dog food is going to give me more time with them then that's what I'm going to do. I know they may be a little upset with me. I currently feed them the wet Beneful dog food and they go crazy for it, but it is full of wheat. I also feed the Purina Pro Plan dry food which is also full of wheat. I just hope that I can find a gluten free food that they like. It took a while for us to find a food that they liked eating. One of my dogs will not eat if she doesn't like the food and we had issues with her when it comes to food. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as brands of gluten free dog food both wet and dry?
  7. I just read a topic about wheat in dog food and it made me think about my situation. I have been on the diet for 2 months now and I have not been feeling any better. I have 2 dogs and one is an obsessive licker and I also kiss my dogs all the time. They sleep with me and are always by my side. If there dog food and treats contain gluten and they are licking me could that make me sick?
  8. Wow! Thank you Heather for sharing your feelings. And thanks to all for posting replies. It brings me such comfort to see that I'm not alone in my depression. You all are so wonderful for being so supportive. Heather, you have responded to a couple of my posts and have always made me feel better with your posts. I hope it helps you feel a little better to know that you have made me feel better on more than one occasion. I just got home from my psychologist appointment and was feeling a little down. I have OCD and it all revolves around being sick and germs. When I was diagnosed with Celiac I was so relieved because I finally had a diagnosis and could feel better. Now I've also fallen into a depression because life seems so impossible. Part of my OCD has to do with perfectionism. Being Celiac has made the OCD a lot worse, because I'm finding it so difficult to be "perfect" on the diet. Just knowing there are others out there who are struggling with the diet and their feelings about it, helps me so much.
  9. I have been really struggling with the diet. I'm on week 6 now and everyday it seems to get harder as my cravings for a Subway sandwich increase. I have bought Gluten Free products and have tried baking my own bread. Nothing was great. It all has been edible but not enjoyable. I did try a whole food only diet but I am a junk food junkie and going from one extreme to the next was too much for me. So in order to keep myself from cheating I have been making my own gluten free food. I had bought a couple of mixes from Betty Crocker. I made the yellow cake mix which was okay the day I made it but the texture was not good the next day. So I was a little hesitant to try any of their other mixes. On Saturday night we had friends over and I was craving a dessert so I made the Betty Crocker Gluten Free Brownies. I made my husband taste them first because he is my official taste tester and he said they were good. So I tried them and they were amazing. The texture was moist and chewy and the flavor was very rich and chocolatey. Our friends ate them and commented that had I not told them they were gluten free they would have never known. This gives me hope that there are tasty gluten free products out there. I just wanted to share this experience with everyone.
  10. I know how you feel. I have been gluten free for 6 weeks now and am completely exhausted. I work full time and don't have the option of cutting my hours because I am the only employee in our office. Somedays I hate being at work so much because I think of how unfair it is that I am so sick and have to work full time. However I need the money badly and so I remind myself how lucky I am to have my job and have the income that I do. I just tell myself that the yuckiness I feel is just temporary and in a few weeks I will feel better than I ever have and this won't be an issue. I know it is really hard to hang in there. If you really don't feel that you can work during this time talk to your doctor and ask them for a doctors note. Your employer can't fire you if you miss work and have a doctors note. You are definitely protected by FMLA. I believe you can take a medical leave of up to 12 weeks and not lose your job under FMLA. When I lived in Hawaii I got very sick (before I was diagnosed). I was able to go on TDI (temporary disability insurance) for 6 weeks. Every state is different and this was something that was available in Hawaii. Your state may have something similar. My employer actually assisted me in applying for the TDI and although they were not happy with me taking a leave my job was waiting for me when I felt better and could return to work.
  11. Thanks for all the comments. It's so easy to get discouraged. I have been really careful but I know it is not possible to be perfect on the diet especially for a beginner. I am just craving wheat so badly and it's so hard not to eat it when the diet is not making you feel better. I have had to be strong for so long and sometimes I just need to have a pitty party. Thank you for the advice and for letting me have a moment of weakness without judgement.
  12. I have been Gluten Free for 4 weeks now and I am still sick. I feel just as sick as I did before I started the diet. I have had some improvements with my depression and anxiety but nothing physical has improved. I'm starting to second guess my diagnosis. How long does it take to see an improvement. It is such a hard diet to stick with and if I don't start feeling better soon I am thinking of going off the diet. I was diagnosed because of my symptoms and I have the genetic marker. The blood test came back negative for the antibodies and I had a scope done but the GI Doctor didn't biopsy me for Celiac (so I basically had the test for nothing). This is why it makes me second guess the diagnosis. I have to see my doctor in 2 weeks for a follow up. She wanted to see if I've had any improvement to my symptoms after being on the diet for 6 weeks. Although this diet is hard I was really hoping that I did have Celiac. I have been sick and undiagnosed for 16 years now and I just want to figure out why my body hates me so much. I'm so tired of feeling so sick.

  14. Thank you everyone for your posts. I think I may be having trouble with nuts. I bought a big can of cashews and have been eating a lot of them. Other than that I have been sticking to whole foods. I did not eat any nuts today and I feel a lot better. I'm still having some dizziness and fatigue but no GI problems. I also noticed that if I eat some fruit for breakfast and take my B12 that I feel a lot better throughout the day. I did bake my own gluten free bread on Sunday. It was so good that even my husband loves it. He actually ate more than I did. I found a great cookbook called "You Won't Believe It's Gluten Free". I am not a very good cook however I find the recipes easy to follow and very tasty. I've been sticking to whole foods most of the time but every now and then I have a craving for bread so the bread I baked has been helpful with keeping me on the diet. I'm understanding now that healing is a process and is going to take some time. I thought as soon as I started the diet I would see immediate results. Now I'm understanding the disease more. I'm so grateful for this website and for all of you who are willing to share your experiences and advice. I don't think I would be able to do this without the support of others. Mahalo Nui Loa!
  15. I am now on my second week of being gluten free and I feel so sick. I haven't been able to eat much because the nausea is so horrible. I am having a hard time working right now because I feel so horrible. Has anyone else felt sicker after going off gluten? I thought I was supposed to feel better. The only thing that has improved has been the constipation. Other than that I feel so run down and sick to my stomach all the time. I started the diet last Sunday and felt great the first week on the diet. Then last Friday I started having GI symptoms again. I really feel like giving up on the diet. My biggest complaint is that this is affecting my work. I can't afford to miss anymore work. I don't know what to do.
  16. My sister came over tonight and told me that her coworker said she has Celiac disease, so when I asked her if her coworker was gluten free, she said no. Her coworker says she knows how much gluten she can eat before she will get sick. I got really annoyed by that and told her that I don't think she has Celiac because the slightest amount of gluten can make someone sick. I don't know why it upset me that her friend is claiming that she has Celiac but yet can eat minimal amounts of gluten and not get sick. I think I'm upset because I am having a hard time getting my family to take my illness seriously. The only person who has been supportive is my husband. For years I was told my symptoms were in my head and that I was making myself sick and now I finally have a diagnosis and I'm working on my diet and feeling better and everyone thinks it is not a "real" disease. I'm so irritated. Oh yeah and her friend calls it "Silly A.."(didn't want to write the curse word but you get the idea) disease. I don't know what she meant by that but it upset me even more. Sorry for the venting but it just really bothered me.

  18. I started my gluten free diet on Sunday. I have been feeling really good however today I am so exhausted and weak. I have been eating whole foods and my diet is a lot better since going off gluten. I slept fairly well last night and probably got at least 6 hours of solid sleep. I can barely keep my eyes open today. I also am so weak that just speaking takes a lot of effort. Could this be symptoms of withdrawal? I am at work and have only been here for an hour and still have 7 hours to go. Any suggestions of how I can wake up and get more energy?
  19. Thank you so much for the suggestions. My husband is going on the diet with me so we will be converting our home to a gluten free one. It's going to take a little bit of time because he needs to eat all the gluten containing food first but we'll get there eventually. I started the diet yesterday and I'm already feeling better. I went to Whole Foods and was so overwhelmed. I bought some gluten free products and they did not taste good to me. I'm glad to hear there are products out there that people enjoy eating. We are sticking to meat & rice for dinners. Lunch is my biggest obstacle. But I will survive on rice cakes and yogurt for lunch until I figure it out. We eat a lot of asian food so we already eat a lot of rice. I also bake a Japanese desert that is called "Mochi" which I love and it is made with "Mochiko" rice flour so it is gluten free. I am going to bake it a lot to help with my sweet food cravings. I am so glad that I found this website. Reading about everyone's experience and getting advice has been so helpful. Again thank you so much.
  20. I haven't had any problems with melatonin either. I used to work at a vitamin store and we did sell a lot of melatonin. I never got any negative feedback. Melatonin is a hormone that the brain produces that regulates your sleep cycle so it shouldn't cause digestive upset. Could it be that the brand of melatonin that you are taking may have wheat in it?
  21. I just read the book "Living Gluten-Free For Dummies" by Danna Korn. It is so helpful. I am new to gluten free too, and the information in this book was extremely helpful. I love to bake and was so sad when I thought about all the things I couldn't bake anymore but the book had a great section of recipes and also explains how you can substitute ingredients in any recipe to make it gluten free.
  22. My brother-in-law was given ensure to help with weight gain when he had cancer. I also drank it when my symptoms were at it's worse and I was losing weight because I couldn't hold solid food down. I know it has a lot of vitamins in it. It tastes really good which helps. You can get it at Wal-Mart.
  23. Thanks all for your replys. I started the gluten free diet yesterday and I'm already feeling better. I usually feel nauseaus and bloated immediately after I eat and since starting the diet I haven't had that problem. I'm hoping that my other symptoms will go away soon. I see the Doctor in 6 weeks for another blood test to check my B12 levels. I think I'm starting to accept the diagnosis. I guess I am in denial because for so long I was told I was making my symptoms up, I was making myself sick, and that it was all in my head. When you've been told that for so long you believe it. It sucks having to give up a lot of foods that I love but I'm glad that this can be treated with diet and I don't have to take any more medication. I am hoping that I will feel well enough to stop taking my medications soon.

  25. I have chronic gastritis and was given carafate however I didn't take it cause it was liquid form and I have trouble with taking liquid medicines. My doctor gave me phenergan for the nausea that was caused from the gastritis. This helps me eat. Usually after an hour after taking it I feel tons better and am able to eat and keep the food down.
