  1. This sounds a lot like my son. After more than 2 years of taking 145mg. of iron daily, his ferritin had barely moved. He was referred to a hematologist and we discovered that his hepcidin doesn’t function properly which blocks iron absorption. The recommended solution was to take his iron supplement every other day (instead of every day, to allow his hepcidin t...
  2. My son is super sensitive, so gluten in art supplies is a big No. His school also reuses cloth placemats and cloth tablecloths throughout the week. He has his own silicone placemat that he keeps in his lunchbox and just puts it over the top of the school one. His lunchbox and placemat get washed every evening at home and the "ritual" of rolling up the school...
  3. @StephanieL: I had not heard of FPIES. I've looked at it briefly and it doesn't "feel" like a fit because he has never had any vomiting with it, but I will ask about it at his next appointment. I'm sad to here about the 504- I don't think the school receives any public funding. :-( But, I had to laugh at the unicorn reference, my allergist said that when...
  4. @weluvgators: Thanks! I will look for the book. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that his allergist can guide us through the process of accommodation.
  5. I'm in the U.S. The form that was sent to me states that no food from a facility that uses peanuts, tree nuts, or sesame are allowed in snacks or lunches. This is in addition to the no PN/TN/sesame and no "may contain" statements. I thought I was reading more into it than what they intended, that's why I asked for a meeting. Nope, that's what they meant...
  6. in a facility that uses peanuts, tree nuts or sesame (and technically, that includes my home kitchen). This eliminates almost every packaged food that is safe for him especially since you said: The school kitchen that the teachers use actually has nuts and peanut butter in it. Do you know this for a fact? Because then, the policy makes no sense...
  7. Hi all, Thank you again for all the replies. I'll try to answer some questions that have come up. Sorry if I repeat myself or miss anything. @StephanieL: I realize that there are people who are severely allergic- my son is one of them. Although the treatment for him is different, it is still a life threatening allergy - one that leaves him with each...
  8. Thank you all for your replies! @Mizzo: Yes, there is someone in his classroom who has a nut allergy. I don't know her parents yet, so I haven't been able to talk to them about the severity of her (and my son's) allergies. I've already had a discussion with the top 3 people at the school and they are completely uninterested in making alterations to the...
  9. Hi, I'm new here and was hoping for suggestions/ advice for a school situation that we are struggling with. My 6 year old son can't eat gluten (we haven't been able to test for celiac because he has never been able to ingest it directly - he reacted severely to it through my breastmilk from birth.) He is also allergic (non-IgE mediated) to rice. His...
