The December 2006 Issue of Gourmet Retailer Magazine Editor's Choice issued the following: According to Market Researcher Packaged Facts, as many as 11 million Americans are afflicted with serious allergies to common foods like milk, wheat and peanuts. More consumers are turning to gluten- and allergy-free foods both to manage specific food sensitivities... -

ARCHIVED Silicone Safe For gluten-free And Non-gluten-free?
Kim replied to emcmaster's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, they are safe. I use them all the time. You can hand wash as well. It is advisable to pull out the wooden handle so that you are sure to get it really clean. Additionally, if you let the 2 parts dry separately, then you won't get black mold growing inside. Kim. -

ARCHIVED Calling All Londoners
Kim replied to floridanative's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I have not been yet, but I understand you can call ahead for gluten-free tea at the Savoy (it is apparently expensive, as I would expect, but very, very good, and fun). I will be in London and Paris later this summer. I have travelled to both previously and done fine with gluten-free, even in pubs. There are wonderful Thai and Indian restaurants in London... -

I'm glad you like our products. Maybe can meet sometime and I can make you some of those biscuits. Smaller companies, such as mine and Anna's (the owner of the bread you like) sure could use the help (re: word of mouth). We're working on our marketing (I have no marketing background so it's been a learning experience for me -- the whole company has), but...

Thanks, I do like it here. Everyone is very friendly. I don't attend CMU, I just liked the area -- always something going on and a very diverse place to live. My family's business is 1-2-3 Gluten Free, Inc. -- we sell premium baking mixes. (www.123glutenfree.com ) and are in stores (in fact, some of the stores people named in earlier posts have our products...

Hello All. I am fairly new to Pittsburgh. (I live near CMU). Moved here after living in Atlanta for about 8 years. New to the area, not new to the diet. I've been gluten-free for about 7+ years and have lots of celiac family members. I would definitely be interested in meeting some others in the area. I was very involved in the Atlanta support group...

ARCHIVED We Can Host Young English Speaking Gfkid In France
Kim replied to marfil's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Martine: What a wonderful idea! I don't have any children myself, but it sounds like a great idea to do an "exchange." I hope that you find a family with a child the right age. Good luck. I will be in Paris next summer with my niece - if you have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Happy Holidays. Kim. -
Thank you so much for the information. I should have been more clear -- it was for someone else (I live in Pittsburgh) but I am going to pass it along. Thanks again. It's so wonderful that everyone is so helpful. Kim.

Is there a local support group in this area? If so, can you please let me have the contact information? Thanks so much. Kim.

The Dole Mandarin oranges in the clear plastic container are, so I'd be willing to bet that the canned ones are as well -- they are most likely the same. Is there a particular ingredient you are questioning? Kim. -

It is safe. I use it all the time. Kim. -
Spelt is definitely NOT gluten free. People just misunderstand because some people on a wheat free diet (not gluten-free) do eat spelt.

ARCHIVED Flu Shot
Kim replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The flu shot in the US (the ones I am aware of anyway) do contain egg, so if you have an egg allergy, you should definitely ask about that before getting the shot. Kim. -
ARCHIVED Americans With Disabilities Act
Kim replied to Mykare's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Richard makes an excellent point. There seem to be some serious misconceptions about the ADA. To be covered by the ADA, you have to have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits you in a major life activity. I think we'd all agree that celiac meets that definition. Having said that, your employer may need to provide you a reasonable... -
I eat at Indian restaurants quite frequently and have NEVER had a problem. I do ask for help from the wait staff/hostess before ordering just to be on the safe side, but most things on the menus are naturally gluten-free. Kim.
