Study Connects Antibiotics in First Year of Life with Celiac Disease
Celiac.com 03/11/2019 - Many researchers believe that intestinal microbiota play a key role in the development of celiac disease. Since gut microbiota are strongly influenced by systemic antibiotics, especially in early life, the role of antibiotics in the development of celiac disease comes into question. Do antibiotics in infancy influence celiac disease rates later on?
The team’s observational nationwide register-based cohort study included all children born in Denmark from 1995 through 2012, and Norway from 2004 through 2012. They followed the children born in Denmark until May 8, 2015 and the children born in Norway until December 31, 2013.
In all, they gathered medical data on more than 1.7 million children, including 3,346 with a diagnosis of celiac disease. Any pa...

Acid Suppression Drugs and Antibiotics Given to Infants Strongly Associated with Celiac Disease
Celiac.com 11/07/2022 - A team of researchers recently set out to investigate why certain at-risk individuals develop celiac disease. They especially wanted to look at the risk levels early on that might influence levels of celiac disease later on in childhood.
The research team included Michael Boechler MD; Apryl Susi MS; Elizabeth Hisle-Gorman MSW PhD; Philip L. Rogers; and Cade M. Nylund MD. They are variously affiliated with the Department of Pediatrics, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD, and the Department of Pediatrics, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD.
For their retrospective cohort study, the team used the Military Healthcare System (MHS) database, the team found children born between October 1, 2001- September...

The Link Between Baby Antibiotics and Later Allergies, Autism, and Autoimmune Diseases
Celiac.com 05/26/2025 - Antibiotics are frequently prescribed to young children to treat infections like ear infections or pneumonia. While these medications are effective in fighting bacterial illnesses, there is growing concern that their overuse in early childhood may disrupt the developing gut microbiome—the community of beneficial bacteria in the digestive system. This disruption could potentially contribute to long-term health issues. A large-scale study analyzed data from over a million children in the United Kingdom to explore whether early antibiotic use (before age 2) is linked to chronic conditions such as allergies, autoimmune disorders, or neurodevelopmental conditions later in life.

The researchers examined electronic health records from children b...

Do Early Antibiotics Raise Celiac Risk? New Study Says No (+Video)
Celiac.com 01/12/2026 - Celiac disease is a long-term immune condition that develops when the body reacts to gluten, a protein that is found in wheat, barley, and rye. Over the years, many researchers have questioned whether certain early life events may influence a child’s chance of developing this condition. One idea that has gained attention is whether antibiotics given during infancy could disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the digestive system and raise the risk of autoimmune problems later in life.
This study explored that question by closely examining records from more than half a million children. The goal was to understand whether the number of antibiotic treatments given during the first year of life had any effect on the likelihood of receiving a celiac disease d...
