Why Does My Stomach Hurt Today?

Recommended Posts

First, I didn't really think I had digestive symptoms before my diagnosis, but I'm now starting to think that stuff I ignored or attributed to consumption of spicy or acidic food (like jalapenos or wine) were actually gluten-caused (b/c those things seemed to always go with pastas and such that are so bland they couldn't have been the cause of my problems!

So, now I'm gluten-free for a month and all of a sudden today, I'm having burning sensations like before. I am crazy careful about wiping any counter tops before I prepare any food and this is what I've eaten today (listed not so you can know how badly I eat but so you can maybe help me figure out what I'm having problems with -- if anything) :)

Cinnamon Chex cereal and toast w/PB from a dedicated gluten-free jar for breakfast (w/coffee and International Delight creamer)

a Kinnikinnik donut mid-morning -- first time to try (yummy)

a sandwich on homemade gluten-free bun w/labeled gluten-free packaged deli meat, grapes, banana, Riceworks crisps, and a homemade gluten-free chocolate chip cookie (King Arthur Flour cookie mix w/ Nestle Tollhouse chips that I've been eating since I first made them last Friday with no problems), and Diet Coke for lunch

Reese's PB cup for early-afternoon snack

Stomach started bothering me about an hour or so after that. Nothing else I've eaten today has made it better or worse, so I'll stop listing there.

The only new things to my system were the homemade bread for toast(using a rice-flour blend I've used successfully for waffles before), a homemade bun for the sandwich (made with a big-name gluten-free bread mix), and the donut. But I am just all but certain none of those "bit" me.

Maybe it's just a light stomach bug?

Any thoughts? I wouldn't think something from yesterday would wait till 2 pm today to cause me problems.

It can show up the next day--it just depends on you and your reaction time.

I would check the coffee--instant coffee and flavored coffees can both contain gluten. Pure coffee *should* be fine.

What about all the utensils/pans you used to make this?

Also, given how long you've been gluten free, you may be in the period where people typically develop secondary food intolerances and allergies. You might want to back off on the gluten-free grains for a while--could just be that you're having a hard time digesting those right now.

Coffee was regular brew coffee. My mixer and all the pans I used were bought since I got the diagnosis and I keep them in a separate cabinet that no one else uses w/any gluten stuff (or anything else for that matter). Only thing I used that was older was my spatula for scraping the sides of the pan, but it's one I rarely use that lives in a drawer that is rarely opened and it had been dishwashed since the last time I used it -- possible it could have been contaminated, but not likely.

I don't want any secondary food allergies! I refuse! And I don't want to have a hard time digesting gluten-free grains! *whine*
