Acapulco, Mexico

Hi everyone!

I am looking into going on an 18 day cruise from San Francisco through the Panama Canal to Ft. Lauderdale.

I will be asking intermitently about ports of call. I am trying to ascertain ahead of time if it will be worth it for me to go. Luckily I found a place in Cabo San Lucas (Sunset da Mona Lisa) that everyone seems to recommend, and has listed right on the menu what is edible by us!

Not it seems that is not the norm down there. I can't find anything in Acapulco.

Is there any place you guys can recommend in that city? Fancy or not, I don't care. Just as long as I can eat there.

I will be posting any other cities I am inquiring about separately.

Thank you in advance!

Lilly

P.S. Any experiences with Holland America?

Hey Lillyth,

I've travelled in Mexico quite a bit, and haven't had any problems. Just stick to the corn tortillas that are very prevalent down there. The locals rarely use flour tortillas. I suggest going to local open air street cafes where you can watch them do everything. You can see them cooking the street tacos, cooking the corn tortillas that they make from scratch, cooking the meat, usually beef or pork, right there in front of you. Get out and walk down the street. Eat at a place that looks like it's popular with the locals.

It's amazingly tasty stuff. And very cheap! And you get to experience the real Mexico.

What concerns me is when I'm at a restaurant anywhere, and I can't see what's going on in the kitchen. That's like playing Russian Rowlette.

best regards, lm

That is so great to know, Larry, thank you!

I will take your advice, and happily. I am very glad to know I will get a more authentic experience - I was worried I would be stuck with only high end resort type places - which, while I love such food, is hardly the *real* Mexico.

You just took care of two ports for me! Now for the other eight.

Oddly this effect has gone now, just happened yesterday evening, the nerve pain is now back to its usual "unpredictable" random self again - but that was the only time I ever had some mechanical trigger for it, don't know why! There's no (or wasn't) actual pain in my neck - it was inside the leg, but when I looked down, now though, the leg pain just comes and goes randomly as before again.

I had MRI scan a few years ago showing everything normal, and now it's no longer triggering the nerve pain when I bow my head today - it only seemed to happen yesterday, and that was the only time it happened! Just seemed weird as no movement has caused my usual nerve pain before. It's normally just random.

Very good pizzeria with small dining room in back of the restaurant. The owner's daughter has celiac & they have gluten free pizza & a gluten free menu. Some items from the regular menu can be made gluten free also. They have a lunch menu which we ordered from & my chicken with spinach & mozzarella over gluten-free penne was delicious. They also have Tuesday night pasta specials & Thursday night chicken pasta specials. We plan on going back for dinner soon.

@Aretaeus Cappadocia and @Russ H thank you both for your helpful advice and information. I haven't seen a GI in years. They never helped me aside from my inital diagnosis. All other help has come from my own research, which is why I came here. I will be even more careful in the future.

@nancydrewandtheceliacclue, you are welcome. After looking at this thread again, I would like to suggest that some of the other comments from @Russ H are worth following up on. The bird-bread may or may not be contributing to what you are experiencing, but it seems unlikely to be the whole story. If you have access to decent healthcare, I would write down your experiences and questions in outline form and bring this to your Dr. I suggest writing it down so you don't get distracted from telling the Dr everything you want to say while you have their attention.
