Ack Soy :(

Had some gluten-free bread a few days ago, and now I'm paying for it... Only remembered now that soy flour is a "bit" of a problem for me, and I vaguely remember it containing soy.

Why oh why do I react even worse to soy than I do to gluten? And don't get me started on oats, I had a whole night episode a few days after oats. After gluten challenges a few months ago, when I was trying to confirm my gluten-intolerance, I had the usual sore stomach/nausea and the runs a few days later, but it didn't last several hours like this....

Bleh.... At least casein doesn't seem to be a problem for me (touch wood). It's bad enough avoiding gluten - now I have to scrutinize all the "gluten-free" stuff as well for soy.

Hi Marz,

I react more strongly to soy too. I swell up like a puffer fish and I'm sore and bloated for a really long time. Longer than if I had been glutened. I also get major headaches.

All my foods have to be gluten, soy and lactose free. I can tolerate some casein. Here are some things I've found that meet those requirements:

Udi's breads, muffins, etc.

Kinnikinnik's breads, bagels, etc.

Tinkyada brown rice pasta

Wydle pretzels

Glutino crackers, pizza crusts

Foods by George brownies

Many of Amy's frozen foods

Lay's potato chips

Cape Code potato chips

These items have soy oil which in small amts doesn't bother me:

Bell & Evan's frozen breaded chicken breasts, fingers, nuggets

Starfish frozen breaded halibut, cod, haddock

If I think of more I'l post them.

Good luck!

p.s. how could I forget - many of the Katz bakery items too

Here's some things I can think of right now that are GFCFSF

Food Should Taste Good chips, but not all are soy-free. Read the labels.

Food For Life brown rice wraps. There was a recall on some of their other products recently, but not these wraps. Not sure what to think about that though. I plan to email them and ask about it.

Mission corn tortillas

Baker's Secret 100% cacao baking squares.

Lundberg rice cakes

Corn Thins

Larabars!

Organic or natural peanut butters, but read labels of course.

Planters peanuts, read labels, not all are ok.

Tempt Hemp milk

Wylde pretzels, but they are so tiny I don't buy them.

Oddly this effect has gone now, just happened yesterday evening, the nerve pain is now back to its usual "unpredictable" random self again - but that was the only time I ever had some mechanical trigger for it, don't know why! There's no (or wasn't) actual pain in my neck - it was inside the leg, but when I looked down, now though, the leg pain just comes and goes randomly as before again.

I had MRI scan a few years ago showing everything normal, and now it's no longer triggering the nerve pain when I bow my head today - it only seemed to happen yesterday, and that was the only time it happened! Just seemed weird as no movement has caused my usual nerve pain before. It's normally just random.

Very good pizzeria with small dining room in back of the restaurant. The owner's daughter has celiac & they have gluten free pizza & a gluten free menu. Some items from the regular menu can be made gluten free also. They have a lunch menu which we ordered from & my chicken with spinach & mozzarella over gluten-free penne was delicious. They also have Tuesday night pasta specials & Thursday night chicken pasta specials. We plan on going back for dinner soon.

@Aretaeus Cappadocia and @Russ H thank you both for your helpful advice and information. I haven't seen a GI in years. They never helped me aside from my inital diagnosis. All other help has come from my own research, which is why I came here. I will be even more careful in the future.

@nancydrewandtheceliacclue, you are welcome. After looking at this thread again, I would like to suggest that some of the other comments from @Russ H are worth following up on. The bird-bread may or may not be contributing to what you are experiencing, but it seems unlikely to be the whole story. If you have access to decent healthcare, I would write down your experiences and questions in outline form and bring this to your Dr. I suggest writing it down so you don't get distracted from telling the Dr everything you want to say while you have their attention.
