  1. Eosinophilic esophagitis can cause dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and frequently has multiple food triggers. It can be diagnosed through biopsy, but the lab must be looking for it specifically. They have to stain the eosinophils and count them under the microscope. Try www.apfed.com for more info.
  2. Basically, it's the IGG versions of the same tests for endomysial antibodies, tissue transglutaminase, etc. (the usual versions of these tests are based on immunoglobulin A...however, you and your doc may have to figure out what lab offers these tests. Here is an abstract + article that describes the alternate testing for people with IGA deficiency: ...
  3. I wanted to add that gluten-free and vegan is do-able, but a nutritionist will help make sure you're replacing the nutrients that would come from the grains. Quinoa is a good gluten-free grain. Nutrition consult is especially important if you are going to do other food eliminations on the basis of an IGG test. Good luck!
  4. It's great that you're doing the IGG tests and eliminating suspect foods...dietary response alone might be enough confirmation for YOU...but when she's 18 years old, will it be enough certainty for HER to stay resolutely gluten free? You will find that IGG testing is not foolproof and has its doubters (along with fans). IGG antibodies can be transient....
  5. If you have the HLA-DQ2 or DQ8 serotype, you had to get it from ONE of your natural parents. There is no way around this. However, having HLA-DQ2 does not guarantee that you will develop Celiac Disease - it is just a necessary part, and the other tipping point (environment? stress? other genes?) is not known yet. So one scenario might go something...
  6. Ha - funny about the title of the post changing from G F Bard's Tale is very good...very available where I live in the midwest. Redbridge is a "mainstream" gluten-free beer.
  7. My oldest son has KP, on the backs of his upper arms particularly (that's a very typical KP location). He has Celiac and also food allergies (peanuts, soy, pork, etc.) KP can be caused by vitamin A deficiency, which we discovered he has. I have been trying to supplement him with A since finding out...too early to know if it will cause it to go away. KP...
  8. I thought I had adult ADD before going gluten-free (I probably did). Things are much better now. I definitely think there is a connection. When you get glutened, do your symptoms come back? Mine do.
  9. Could it be tyrosine deficiency? Tyrosine is needed for the body to produce melanin...
  10. Thanks for sharing what you have, Mike. Thanks for doing the experiment, Shay. I can think of a number of reasons why products could test one way or another, or people could get sick or not. I still find the information useful...it's more information than what I currently have available. More info is always good, in my opinion. Anyone following this...
  11. Again, best wishes. It sounds like you are doing all you can. RCD sounds just awful! You might ask your GI / team if there are nutritional supplements that are easy to digest for someone with damaged villi....I'm not talking about Ensure. My oldest son has a chronic GI condition called eosinophilic gastroenteritis in addition to his Celiac Disease...it...
  12. Hi Amber - I had decades of other issues before I developed outright Celiac Disease in my mid-30s and had a rapid unintentional weight loss. I think you're right that the other gluten sensitivity issues can precede the development of Celiac Disease or occur without it. I have sleep paralysis personally and in my family as well. Also RLS and automatic...
  13. Ross - I am very sorry that you are not seeing any improvement after a long time on a gluten-free diet. How are you feeling? Is it affecting your general health? I hope you don't mind me asking, is your wife gluten-free along with you? (If not, it would be a good time to try a completely gluten-free lifestyle for both of you, including a new toaster...
  14. I suffer from "C" (opposite of "D") unless glutened, and I tend to get a lump around where the ileocecal valve is that separates the small intestine from the large one...lower right quadrant...I assume this is pretty normal and just something I feel because I'm pretty thin. Eventually it moves. In my experience, it is VERY painful to add an accidental glutening...
  15. I'm very interested in hearing people's experiences with testing. If the method ends up being reliable, I have no idea why everyone who test should NOT post the results of their tests here for others to know. It does not seem unethical to do so...if you're worried about the food manufacturers, then just post a disclaimer that this was the result of...
  16. I have to agree with many of the replies here - this thread is a good one for anyone looking to get a start with kid-friendly gluten-free eating. The kinnikinnick frozen pizza crusts are really very good - pre-gluten-free, I would have preferred a cracker thin crust, but after gluten-free I kind of miss soft breads, and the Kinnikinnick crust is very...
  17. In my experience, most of my lipsticks/balms/glosses have not contained gluten, so you're probably not running a terrible risk. Depending on the situation, you might think it's worth chancing it. If you get sick the first time from NOT saying anything, then by the second time you should know her well enough to tell her about your need for gluten-free kisses...
  18. Oh, I am sooo sorry. When I get CC, I get GI symptoms, but I do not throw up. I do have DH, and we're supposed to have milder GI symptoms. My youngest son did throw up cereals violently when we tried to introduce. But since being gluten-free, he's also been puke free. I assume that he's probably had some minor CC indidents, too. I don't know what...
  19. I totally understand the "one thing at a time" feeling. Sometimes when you change too much, you can't figure out what worked. Still, if your gut is telling you there's a cause for all of it...you will eventually check it out. My oldest son who had colic and eczema as an infant ended up having the following conditions diagnosed over the first seven years...
  20. My husband and I both have Celiac (unusual coincidence), and didn't find out until our kids were ages 6, 3 and 1. We initially suspected Celiac because of the combination of symptoms of various family members, including the kids. We tested all the kids. Only the oldest tested positive, but the two youngest had DRAMATIC improvement on a gluten-free diet...
  21. If she has been gluten free for some time (few months at least) and there's no change, it would certainly make me wonder about soy and/or milk, since she is getting them all the time. Also corn. I don't have Pediasure in the house to check the label, but I believe it has some combination of proteins from milk/soy/corn. Since she already has a tube...
  22. lauri, wish i knew the answers...i get what seems to be eczema or dandruff in my ear folds...it's very scaly and drives me crazy. it seems to come and go. I also get a dreaded nasal sore that shows up periodically. I've had it maybe three times all year. A little ointment helps it go away faster. I don't know if it's Celiac related or perhaps...
  23. My doctor once commented that my prolactin levels must be elevated (based on symptoms, not testing).
  24. Amy, I'm so sorry for your loss... I'm glad you can see a little silver lining in the possibility of getting pg again. I had multiple miscarriages along the road to having my three boys. My first pregnancy resulted in a very early loss. Right after that, I became pregant with what would turn out to be my first son. I didn't discover it until...
  25. Bonnie - couple of questions...in her G-tube, is she taking an elemental formula like Neocate, or is she given something like Pediasure that contains some whole food proteins that might cause a reaction in some kids? (Just to be clear, pediasure does not contain gluten but does contain milk and soy proteins, which could cause problems for some). Has she...
