  1. Weight Gain

    Thanks to everyone for replying. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only on this diet gaining weight, not that I'm happy you are by all means, it's just that I was trying to figure out why this was happening. I'm also a diabetic and started using the Insulin pump in July of 2009 and I was considering taking the pump off for a few months because I thought that could be the reason. Well I took the pump off today and my blood sugar went through the roof.... Needless to say the pump came back on. Especially after reading all of your posts where weight gain seems common when starting to eat gluten free. My plan is cut out the junk, not that I ate much of it, and also exercise more... I read that I can have a slow metabolism, so by shaking things up with more exercise I can get out of this rut. I'm also going to look into this New Atkins, that will surely help with my Diabetes as well as hopefully help me shed a few lbs. Good luck to all of you
  2. Weight Gain

    I was diagnosed in November 2008 and been gluten free ever since. I have however been gaining weight steadily since then. I eat well and exercise every day, but still gain weight. Has anyone experienced this? and what suggestions do you have to help me loose weight. Thanks
  3. Cross Contamination

    I was like you when I first started on the gluten free diet. Few symptoms, mild reactions to gluten. But now, 18 months into the gluten free journey, the symptoms are immediate and last up to a week. I don't understand why we get worse as we heal....is that typical??
  4. I Feel So Angry

    I've been gluten free since Nov.2008 and I went for supper at my mother-in-laws tonight and she had made meatloaf. So I asked what she put in it and she said "nothing bad, I put meat, onions salt, pepper, and soya sauce". Hmmmm OK Then I asked did you put bread crumbs in your meat. She said "No, I only put a piece of bread" :o :o I can't believe after almost 18 months, she still had no clue. I tell you, you really can't let anyone cook for you.... Yesterday I went to a restaurant for lunch. I told the waitress I had a gluten allergy and she wrote it on her pad. I purposely ordered a garden salad with Olive Oil. I told her "No croutons". I swear to God, within an hour I had bloating and cramps like never before.. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH So what happened??? Was there croutons in the salad that the chef just took out of my plate before serving it?? Who knows.... I'm having a real hard time trusting restaurants now....
  5. I was diagnosed with Celiac in October of 2008. I've been completely Gluten Free ever since, with the exception of getting accidently glutened. Lately I've had incredible bloating and belly cramps for no reason. From writing what i've eaten the past few days, I've noticed that I had yogurt one day and Glucerna Shakes the other day. Could I now be Lactose Intolerant as well as Celiac. How common is this??
  6. I've been told that Soya Sauce had gluten. What if there is no mention of wheat in the ingredients? Here are the ingredients: Water, Salt, Caramel, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Corn Syrup, Glucose-Fructose, Sodium Benzoate. Does this mean it's gluten free?? Rachel
  7. What Do You Do.....

    I was like you. I've been gluten free for a year now. If I did get glutened, I wouldn't feel it, maybe the occasional bloating but that's about it. BUT it all started 2 weeks ago while I was on a business trip and I ate a McDonalds Southwest salad with Grilled chicken. The chicken was full of gluten (wheat & barley). Well Even though I only had 2 bites of the chicken, the salad was C/C'd by it and I got sick. Never thought it would affect me the way it did. The day after I ate it, I had bloating and pain. Then for a week after, I had D & vomiting. Now yesterday I had chicken & fries from a restaurant (delivery) and there was a bun in there. I took the bun out and ate the rest. WELL again like I said in my initial post, never have I felt such pain in my life. I was bent in 2 from the pain, I couldn't stand straight. My thoughts is that my intestine is so damaged from the C/C which I never paid attention to, that I'm paying the price today if I eat anything that could have touched gluten. Beware. I was under the impression that the longer you were gluten free, the better you'd be if you did get glutened. It doesn't seem to be the case. Rachel
  8. when you're in pain from getting glutened? I have the worse stomach cramps I've ever had, to the point where I cannot eve stand straight. Work ordered out chicken yesterday for lunch and I'm thinking I got glutened by either the chicken or the C/C from the bun being in the box. Who knows. Is there any special remedy to get rid of these cramps?
  9. Last Thursday night while away from home on a business trip, I had a Southwest salad with grilled chicken from McDonalds. I specifically told them I has a gluten allergy and asked them what was in salad. Well when I got back to my hotel to eat the salad, as I was eating, I looked up the ingredients online. Well the chicken had wheat and barley gluten in it. I imediately stopped eating the chicken, took it out of the salad, but of course the salad was now contaminated. Well I've been Celiac for a year now and I was Asymptomatic when diagnosed so I never paid too much attention to the cross-contamination. Well, did I feel this one, I was bloated and crampy on Friday, had D on Saturday - Monday and Tuesday I felt nausious, threw up and D and I still have D today . Do you think I'm nausious and have D because of the Glutening or did I catch a bug?? Thanks Rachel
  10. I have diabetes and thyroide disease for 27 years now. Last November my Dr. decided to test me for Celiac. Well guess what....another nail in my coffin.... Makes me wonder what else is in store for me with these auto-immune diseases. Why is my body shutting me down.... Oh well, "Live, Love, Laugh" as much and as long as you can...
  11. Have you been checked for Diabetes? Many of your symptoms are those of Diabetes, excessive thurst, weight loss, fatigue, hunger... I've been a diabetic for 27 years now and I've just been diagnosed with Celiac 5 mths ago. These auto-immune diseases are all related. My Gastroenterologiest told me, diabetes, Celiac and Thyroide diseases are like the 3 musketeers.... They go together. Good luck and please see a doctor regarding the above possibilities. Rachel

    Hey Crankies...LoL, Good luck with the gluten-free diet. It's not that hard once you get going. You have to be carefull for CC. I'd also check the sushi and Indian food. Soya sauce is a big No No and so are alot of spices in indian food. Check and read ingredients carefully. Good luck
  13. I've was diagnosed in Oct.08 and been eating gluten free since Nov.08. Although I didn't have major symptoms, occasional bloating and constipation, I've felt alot better since eating gluten-free. I have to admit that I have eaten stuff that I shouldn't have in the past month, but I've had no symptoms what so ever. No Bloating, no pains, no C. My question is, with time, as the Vili heals, does Celiac go away? Or I've been reading that after eating gluten-free for a while, people get more sensitive? It's difficut for me because of the fact that I don't feel any symptoms, that I want to eat anything and think that it doesn't affect me. I'm Somewhat confused about all this Rachel
  14. Hi all, I'm a sales rep. for a beverage packaging company. My territory is Eastern Canada so I travel alot. It's not easy going to restaurant. I have to say I get glutened alot. When glutened, I get the C with bloating & pains . Not very comfortable when I'm talking with customers. But at least I'm not worried about having to run to the bathroom. Sometimes I wish that was the case, cause then that would make me pay more attention and be more careful of what I eat Rachel
  15. I'm checking the ingredients in Halls and they list isomalt as an ingredient. I know that malt is gluten but is isomalt?? thanks Rachel
