Celiac.com 06/15/2023 - Today Show co-anchor, Dylan Dreyer, recently revealed that her 6-year-old son, Calvin, has been diagnosed with celiac disease.

Calvin had been experiencing stomach pain, headaches, and hair loss for months, leading his parents to seek answers from doctors.  An endoscopy showed that Calvin had a stomach ulcer, which turned out to be caused by celiac disease. The family has now adopted a gluten-free diet to manage the condition.

To avoid gluten contamination at home, Dylan had to make significant changes to her kitchen. She also finds it challenging to control Calvin's environment outside of the home. However, Calvin's teacher has been supportive, providing gluten-free snacks for him at school. Although it was initially daunting, Dylan has experimented with gluten-free recipes, and is happy to see Calvin enjoying the new food.

She wants to raise awareness about celiac disease and connect with other parents in similar situations. Calvin has adapted well to the changes and understands the importance of avoiding gluten. With the diet change, Calvin's health has significantly improved, and he no longer experiences the previous symptoms. Dylan is relieved and delighted to see her son feeling better.

Getting a celiac diagnosis as quickly as possible can help to prevent more extreme cases like the ulcer that affected the health of young Calvin Dreyer. Once diagnosed with celiac disease, getting on a gluten-free diet, and remaining vigilant about the diet, is the only way to make sure that the gut heals properly and stay healed.

Best of luck to Dylan for a speedy recovery and to them both for calling attention to the importance of getting medical help if you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of celiac disease, including ulcers, in many cases.

Eating Gluten Not Associated with Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis in Women without Celiac Disease
Celiac.com 06/17/2020 - Researchers have found no connection between dietary gluten consumption, and the rates of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis in women without celiac disease, according to data from Digestive Disease Week. The researchers found that for women without celiac disease, "eating gluten does not increase a person's chance of being diagnosed with IBD. We found that dietary gluten intake was not associated with increased risk for ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease,” says Emily W. Lopes, MD, from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
A team of researchers including Lopez and her colleagues carried out a prospective study of more than 208,000 women without prior diagnosis of celiac disease or IBD at baseline, selected from the Nurses' Health Study, Nurses' Hea...
