Building-Up Gluten Before Testing And Symptom Questions

My son has a GI appt with Celiac specialists in Baltimore, MD Oct 4th and my husband and I discussed whether we ought to give him small amounts of gluten a day until his appt. or should we just strictly abstain as usual. We decided on the small amounts of gluten until appt. day at least and that way he has a better chance at having a more accurate testing. Here is what is happening so far after about 4 days or so on gluten: he's grouchier than usual but being 2 he really don't ever say something hurts so I cannot say if it's his stomach hurting or not but perhaps it's a mood thing instead. His usual symptoms are GI and what I was expecting isn't really happening and I find it odd that when we purposefully give him gluten, the usual doesn't happen. Normally his poop is yellow, "fluffy", full of food and an enormous amount of it with the smell that could kill a person LOL. This time around though his poop is very formed, seemingly hard as it's more in balls and some formed, some is black-ish, some is brownish and a bit yellowish. The black-ish I am keeping an eye on but the smell is definitely there. Why the change from the usual GI symptoms? When it's accidental and in smaller amounts it's a dramatic change but this change is rather small. He seems normal otherwise.

For me I am about 5 weeks into mine and I've had a slight stomach ache everyday, tons of gas and some painful enough to make me cry, C and D alternatly, feeling drugged (the worst part), chronic fatigue, anxiety, bad mood, depression, weight gain, headache almost everyday and bloating that is making me look hugo-prego. When I was 4 weeks into the glutening I started having BAD intestinal issues with crippling pain starting from my stomach on out to burning, orange D. The symptoms are different everyday though which is strange isn't it? I do also wonder about my baby, when she has a poop it has white globs in it, does anybody know what that is?

So for my 2 year old will 4 weeks be enough time for him to be on gluten? This is the most he's ever had and on purpose. For me: why are my symptoms so all over the place?

My symptoms used to be all over the place. I had to go on a full elimination diet because it was so confusing. I react differently to wheat and rye, and I also had a lot of trouble with rich foods. I think your whole system just gets more reactive and it becomes a matter of what you eat with the gluten.

I hope you get the results you're looking for with your gluten challenge so you can go back off the stuff again!

Ya me too because I am sick of the symptoms and look forward to getting rid of how I am feeling now. I'm just tired of wondering, KWIM?

Yes, it does. And joint pain is another celiac symptom that is now well-recognized.

Does my iron loss sound like celiac to you?

Being as how you are largely asymptomatic, I would certainly advise undertaking a gluten challenge in order to get formal testing for celiac disease. We have many forum participants who become violently ill when they undertake a gluten challenge and they therefore can't carry through with it. That doesn't seem to be the case with you. The reason I think it is important for you to get tested is that many or most people who don't have a formal diagnosis find it difficult to be consistent with the gluten-free diet. They find ways to rationalize that their symptoms are due to something other than celiac disease . . . especially when it becomes socially limiting.  The other factor here is by being inconsistent with the gluten free diet, assuming you do have celiac disease, you are likely causing slow, incremental damage to your gut, even though you are largely asymptomatic. It can take years for that damage to get to the point where it results in spinoff health problems. Concerning genetic testing, it can't be used for diagnosis, at least not definitively. Somewhere between 30 and 40% of the general population will have one or both of the two genes known to be associated with the development of active celiac disease. Yet, only about 1% of the general population will develop active celiac disease. But the genetic testing can be used as a rule out for celiac disease if you don't have either gene. But even so, that doesn't eliminate the possibility of having NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @ThomasA55! Before I give my opinion on your question about whether or not you should undergo a gluten challenge, I would like to know how you react when you get a good dose of gluten? Are you largely asymptomatic or do you experience significant illness such as nausea and diarrhea? You mentioned intermittent joint pain before you began experimenting with a low gluten diet. Anything else?
