Antibodies For Celiac On Blood Work And Biopsy

Recommended Posts

I wanted to know for how long before one gets their blood tested or their small bowel biopsied (after having a diagnosis and going gluten free) does one need to eat gluten FILLED foods for any changes to appear on the blood work and biopsy?

Some doctors will still tell you 2-3 weeks is long enough. But Celiac specialists think anywhere from 3 months to 5 years for damage to show sufficient for a diagnosis of Celiac once you have been gluten free. Everyone is different, so each person would need a different amount of gluten for a different amount of time to show positive results.

I did a two month gluten challenge and although I was severely ill from having gluten it was not long enough to damage the intestines enough to show in the biopsy or allow the antibodies to "leak" out of my intestines and into my bloodstream.
