Horrible Weekend

I had the worst weekend...and I need to vent about it. I had been doing so good (or so I thought) for a little while of not cheating. Then on Friday morning I started to feel sick....then it progressed into the horrible, gut-wrenching-wanna-curl-up-and-die PAIN! I don't have a clue what I ate to make me feel this way. I'm still baffled at what caused this. Well anyway- I had to work at 11:30 until 4:30. So, I went to work - trying to work through the pain (if I kept moving and didn't breathe - I was "okay"...haha). My boss asked if I was awake yet...and I told him I was but in pain. So, he was aware of the situation - but I tried not to make it a big deal....it was a really busy day. Well anyway - about 2 hours into my shift, I was kneeling down at a table taking their order when my vision started to go really blurry...and everything was starting to "fade away." (I've never passed out before - so I'm not sure if this is what happened.) I barely made it into the back area when I kinda just collapsed down to my knees and put my head in my hands. All I could hear was food frying. It was really busy - but I couldn't hear anyone talking or anything. It was so scarey! One of the other servers finally noticed me and asked if I was okay (I guess I said no). He got my boss and they helped me back into the office. I was so shakey and hyper-ventillating, etc. They called my hubby to come get me. He said I looked like death rolled over when I came out to the car. I was in so much pain.

Well, the pains finally went away around 4...but I had a lasting headache for another 12 hours. The next day (we went to visit my family for my mom's b-day - two hours north - we left on Friday night)....we decided to order lunch from Outback (since I knew what I could and couldn't eat)...kinda for my mom's birthday (and to feed all the guys helping my dad do some landscaping in their yard). Well, shortly after eating my salad - here we go again! The pains weren't quite so bad and didn't last as long - but were not fun just the same. I was so afraid to eat anything after that!! I haven't felt this way in so long. Normally when I cheat - I spend a while in the bathroom and then I'm fine (if it's "bad" - the gas lasts for awhile...but normally I'm fine shortly after).

To make matters worse - our car was broken into (the one left in the parking lot where I work - when my hubby had to pick me up and then we left for the weekend)...nothing in it to steal - but had to get the drivers window replaced. Ugh!! And my daughter has a yucky ear infection and cold! And I either caught her cold or my allergies are acting up (since it's getting warmer and the wind is blowing a lot).

To make matters even worse! (haha!) My hubby wanted to eat fast food tonight - and I decided I was probably okay to do so too. We ate Carl's Jr. I got the "low carb" burger (since it comes with no bun)... and fries. I was leary about the fries - but cross contamination has never seemed to bother me before. *UGH* Oh my! Right this minute my tummy is gurgling and tossing and turning and I'll be runnin to the bathroom (for the 3rd time) any minute! No horid pains like friday and saturday - but not quite normal either. I don't get it! What happened to me!? This sucks!

Well, that is exactly how I felt all summer last summer, before figuring out I have celiac disease, I was soooooooooo sick! Maybe all the cheating is finally catching up with you? Do your utmost to be gluten free from this minute (no risks, like with the fries, you obviously got glutened), and hopefully you'll feel better soon. It seems that suddenly you KNOW when you get glutened, you get a horrible reaction. Who knows why now, and not before. Now you know how we feel when glutened! Not that I wish it on you, but maybe its your wakeup call, to finally understand what you've been doing to yourself.

Enough preaching, I am truly sorry you are feeling so bad. But maybe it's a good thing, because hopefully now you take the diet seriously, and understand that cheating is really, really a terrible idea!

Nothing worse than getting glutened. I had this happen a few weeks ago. My first since I went gluten-free in february 2006. I was sick for a couple of weeks and finally needed to call the doc for help. I was miserable. I was advised by the doc and others on this site to eat veggies, fruit and fresh meat. I have done exactly that. I feel better. hope it works for you too. Tara

I'm sorry you are feeling so bad... I hope you feel better soon... Keep in mind, it could also just be a virus that is making you sick... if you are being careful and trying to avoid cc and avoid cheating, there is always the chance that it's a bug, OR even other intolerances. If it is gluten, and you still can't figure out where you may have gotten glutened, it may be time for a complete back to basics approach.

oh and sorry about the car too, that really sux

@RMJ it makes sense as it’s something I’ve experienced more than once. Currently 24 weeks and baby is doing well! Will be seeking more medical advice today

Thank you! This is great information and perfect timing because we have our first appointment for a second opinion tomorrow.

Bright blood in the stool would indicate bleeding down at the lower end in the colorectal area as opposed to the small bowel below the stomach where celiac manifests damage to the villous lining. Are these blood stools persistent? It's not unusual for this to happen once in a while to most anyone when a small surface vessel breaks, kind of like a nose bleed. As Scott Adams said, you must continue to consume regular amounts of gluten if the specialist will be doing additional testing for celiac disease, which could include an endoscopy with biopsy of the small bowel lining.

Checkouts gluten-free recipes at twww.redstaryeast.com We tried a bread machine years ago and weren’t happy with results. Bread machines have pre-set rise & bake times.  Unfortunately, the program doesn’t adjust to slight differences when measuring, relative humidity or temperature of ingredients & in kitchens.  Lots of efforts for ONE odd- sized loaf that hard to cut into useable slices.  College-aged son found best use for bread machine was as heavy duty mixer that ‘kept dust in the box.’  He would pre-measure ingredients for 2-3 loaves & use machine mix up individual batches.      Since gluten-free bread needs  to rise only once, each recipe of dough went into a loaf pan. Pans sat counter to rise—time dependent of temp in kitchen. Then, baked in oven until he, not machine, decided it was done.     Took ~10 min extra up front to measure & mix additions but adds nothing to rise & bake times.     Loaves are great for slicing (Slice extra before freezing!). One mess to clean up, saves time & energy since you need to bake  as is half as often (If  you plan to bake lots more than bread, opt for KitchenAid/ heavy duty mixer instead.  Cover with dish towel to capture dust!)     Personally, I’m sure I had as a kid since I’ve never been a fan  of bread. .  Have been wrapping corn tortillas around things for 40+ years.  Can still get a dozen 12-pks of tortillas for same or less than price as 1 load of gluten-free bread. PLUS. the tortillas have more nutrients!

Welcome to the forum. You are lucky because in Korean food, many classic meals such as bibimbap without sauce, barbecue meats and some kinds of soups generally do not have gluten. But it is a good idea to confirm with the restaurant workers for safety reasons. Regarding certain locations, I enjoy going to places such as Plant in Seoul and Sprout in Busan. Moreover, using applications like HappyCow or TripAdvisor can assist you to discover additional choices in the regions you plan to visit. One big tip: it is good to know some important Korean sentences, for example 'I cannot eat gluten' (geulluteuneul meogeul su eopseoyo)  or 'Does this have gluten?' (igeoe neun geulluteuni deureo innayo?) because they can be very helpful. If you are considering getting a local guide, I'd suggest this one https://gowithguide.com/korea They were very helpful when I needed to find places with gluten-free food options because they provide tours tailored to your preferences. Good luck with your travels! 🍻
