Korma Sauces

Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up on this product. I made some curry with the Seeds of Change Korma sauce. It says Gluten-Free on the jar. I had some at dinner, then some again at lunch the next day. By 3:00, I had a gnawing pain right about where my heart lies. I went for a walk with my neighbor and the pain got worse and worse. I began to think I was having a heart attack. However, if I relaxed, it would lessen some, so I didn't think that was it. However, in the past, when glutened, I have had these same strange pains in other areas - lower back, right side of back, shoulder blades, etc. so I waited it out. It did get better the next day, but then I had D and lots of stomach noises all day. I usually have an iron stomach. Finally, today, four days later, I am feeling somewhat back to normal, with just a twinge left of the pain. I couldn't figure out what I ate that had gluten because I am usually so careful. I decided to check out the sauce online and here is what it says:

Water, heavy cream* (milk*), coconut*, onions*, evaporated cane sugar*, tapioca starch*, sunflower oil*, sea salt, lemon juice*, garlic*, cilantro*, ginger*, turmeric*, coriander*, cumin*, cayenne pepper*, paprika*, cardamon*, cinnamon*.

* = Certified Organic

GLUTEN FREE**

**This item has no added gluten to the ingredients, but is manufactured on lines which produce items that do contain gluten. A thorough cleaning of the production lines is done between production runs (hot water / sterilization / high pressure air). Although we follow good manufacturing practices, we are unable to guarantee that the lines are 100% gluten free when our products are run.

Dang it! It says gluten-free, but everyone knows that hot water does not affect the gluten protein, so if it is on the line, it is probably still enough to CC. I am pretty certain that is what caused the problem. I don't want to test out the remainder to find out - in the trash it goes. I also bought their Tikka Masala sauce - says gluten-free on the label, but same thing on the website.

      Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

      I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

      Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

      Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
