Please Help Three Kids And A Mom With Varied Symptoms

Hope Full One Newbie

Hi everyone this is my first post. My 9 year old was diagnosed with Lyme disease August 2009 but once her high yeast levels were treated and she went off wheat at the same time she was a new child- she is also off dairy corn eggs and soy right now. We still use oatmeal and she seems okay. When she is in the sun with sunscreen she is moody and exhausted- I found this forum using a google search for gluten free sunscreen- thank you! She still has some gas, bloating says her bladder feels "tight" or hard at times but not daily. No diarrhea, loose sometimes constipated sometimes. She also is very anxious and irritable at times. tested gifted. Oh yeah, she was born with bilateral club feet which have been corrected and they thought she had hydrocephalus- just an enlarged ventricle in her brain. hypoglycemia

My firstborn son age 11 had suicidal thoughts last summer , has spondylolisthesis- vertebrae moving in in his back thankfully stage 1, he has processing issues especially with writing and spelling and cannot remember more than one thing at a time or stay focused very long at all. He has random pain in joints at times and once I gave him fish oil the suicidal thoughts went away (he has a happy home life) He is off corn and dairy. He is constipated and recently had stomach upset no vomiting due to constipation. still on wheat... tested gifted. chemical sensitive- does not like soap sprays toothpaste etc- uses them though special brands. hypoglycemia (not as bad now) craves sugar

My 5 year old son, has flat feet, back pain, had surgery on his esotropia eyes (cross eyes) and is a bit delayed in skipping and such, but is reading and doing well in writing and math in home school. He is off of peanuts and all nuts, corn, wheat , and dairy. Moody and irritable at times, chemical sensitive- does not like soap toothpaste shampoo etc a battle to wash hands some times even with special brands and still brushes water only- no cavities :) hypoglycemia, craves carbs

I have struggled with anxiety and depression off and on since my 20's , especially since having babies, I am 38 and had a season of near chronic fatigue 5 years ago felt better after supplements through a chiropractor and going off soy dairy and eggs but stayed on wheat and baked organic homemade bread for my family for 5 years or so, I have had 3 c sections, 2 ectopic pregnancies, umbilical hernia surgery, my right tube removed with the 2nd ectopic rupture. I had a gall bladder attack November 2009 and had symptoms of nausea prior since April 2009. Kept my gall bladder so far by going off of wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, fried or processed anything, beef, pork, corn and some nuts and peanuts. I can eat walnuts and cashew butter so far so good. hypoglycemia

Is this caused by genetics- Mom had breast cancer, anxiety, arthritis diagnosis years ago- turned our not to be severe , my dad is type 2 diabetic, bi-polar, Epstein bar syndrome when I was a kid, IBS, his second cousin's daughter with chron's in her 20's

all his relatives die of cancer- dad brother etc

or is this food sensitivities caused by toxicity- also, can our body display antibody bands on a lyme test because it is fighting the food it takes in??? All these questions and more live at five...

Thank you for any comments help or prayers

You do sound like you could be a family of celiacs. Have you had the family screened? Please do so before you go off gluten.

The 11 year old really tugged my heart strings, he sounds so much like me at that age. The only difference is I didn't just have thoughts of suicide, I did it and was brought back on arrival at the hospital. They didn't know how long I had been 'dead' and I was in a coma for days. The doctors told my Mom I would be brain damaged and might never awaken but thankfully they were wrong. The doctors couldn't understand why I could never tell them why I did it. Even now years after my diagnosis when I get glutened the overwhelming depression hits hard for a day but since I now know why I get that way I am able to fight the suicidal ideation as I know it will pass.

After you are all tested do get the family on the diet no matter what the test results. I am betting it will really make a big difference in your lives.

Yes, it does. And joint pain is another celiac symptom that is now well-recognized.

Does my iron loss sound like celiac to you?

Being as how you are largely asymptomatic, I would certainly advise undertaking a gluten challenge in order to get formal testing for celiac disease. We have many forum participants who become violently ill when they undertake a gluten challenge and they therefore can't carry through with it. That doesn't seem to be the case with you. The reason I think it is important for you to get tested is that many or most people who don't have a formal diagnosis find it difficult to be consistent with the gluten-free diet. They find ways to rationalize that their symptoms are due to something other than celiac disease . . . especially when it becomes socially limiting.  The other factor here is by being inconsistent with the gluten free diet, assuming you do have celiac disease, you are likely causing slow, incremental damage to your gut, even though you are largely asymptomatic. It can take years for that damage to get to the point where it results in spinoff health problems. Concerning genetic testing, it can't be used for diagnosis, at least not definitively. Somewhere between 30 and 40% of the general population will have one or both of the two genes known to be associated with the development of active celiac disease. Yet, only about 1% of the general population will develop active celiac disease. But the genetic testing can be used as a rule out for celiac disease if you don't have either gene. But even so, that doesn't eliminate the possibility of having NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @ThomasA55! Before I give my opinion on your question about whether or not you should undergo a gluten challenge, I would like to know how you react when you get a good dose of gluten? Are you largely asymptomatic or do you experience significant illness such as nausea and diarrhea? You mentioned intermittent joint pain before you began experimenting with a low gluten diet. Anything else?
