Lupus And Gluten

Hi there. I am new to the site, and i am visiting to find out more about gluten.. what exactly are the ingredients you look for? I've found a lot of info. but no specific lists. I was diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease, which is in the family of lupus.. recently i've been delving into eastern medicine, and they believe that gluten plays a part in my diagnosis.. has anyone ever heard of such a thing? I"m willing to give it up to see if it helps my symptoms, but i just wanted to see if anyone had ever heard of that.. I've seen on site that some have + ANA testing, as do i . Also any help on those ingredients would be appreciated. Thanks kathy

Celiac and Lupus are both autoimmune diseases, and they are both associated with the same gene. "Certain alleles (variations of a single gene) of an HLA gene have been associated with certain autoimmune diseases, such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease." It is possible that you may have celaic disease or a gluten intolerance. The diet is definatley worth a try. However, if you ever want an official diagnosis, you must be consuming gluten or you may get false negative results.

I have celiac disease and probably mixed connective tissue disease too. I say probably because I haven't gotten an official diagnosis, but I do have speckled pattern anti-nuclear antibodies and have had two flare-ups. So I'm pretty sure that I have it. I haven't spent too much time researching it though. I had symptoms of celiac disease first and I know it sounds kind of weird, but I feel more in touch with that diagnosis. Maybe it's the board. I should probably join a lupus or mixed connective tissue disease board, but I don't know if I'd have time to keep up with that too. I have a hard time with just this one.

So, are you asking if gluten may cause lupus? Or make the symptoms worse? I don't really know if that is what you are asking. But I do know that lupus, celiac disease and other auto-immune disorders are more likely to occur together. How long have you been diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease? What are your symptoms?

Hi Kathy,

My mother developed lupus about 15 years ago. They managed to diagnose that quite quickly but couldn't diagnose her chronic diarrhoea, weightloss, etc. etc. She is 55 years old and weighs 38 kgs (83 pounds). She has been tested for everything under the sun EXCEPT Celiac Disease. She has now lost her hearing, her organs are failing, she is bedridden, cannot keep food down, half her stomach has been removed and the list goes on.

I was diagnosed with celiac disease about 4 months ago - I was heading the same way as her - similar symptoms for many years. BUT, can you believe this, neither she nor her doctors will listen to me about celiac disease or gluten. I have explained everything, including the fact that I probably got it from her but no-one will listen.

I believe this is the result of undiagnosed celiac disease and the fact she has continued to eat gluten her whole life.

Please look into the gluten angle very carefully.

It's scary to see your mom suffer when you know what's wrong. It seems a lot of people here are familiar with not being taken seriously. How many times have we heard "It's al in your head." Good Luck :rolleyes:

      I'm not saying this is what you have, but your description reminds me of Morgellons, which are not very well understood. Here is a review from a reputable source.       Hi Trent, no dairy. Other than good quality butter. I have been lactose free for years. No corn, sugar, even seasonings and spices. I don't eat out. I cook my own food.

      Hello Russ! Thank you so much for your reply.  I have not had an antibody test done, ever, relating to gluten. Last year I had an allergy test done via blood draw (as my insurance wouldn't cover the skin test) but this was for pollen and grasses, not food. Even on the blood test I had extremely high levels of reactions to each allergen. Could this seasonal allergy inflammation be contributing to my celiac inflammation? I am so careful, there is no way I could ingest gluten. For example, couple of months ago I tried a cough drop that says it was gluten free. I checked ingredients, it seemed fine. But just taking one of those caused me to have nausea, vomiting, and the same extreme abdominal pain. Have you ever heard of anyone else having symptoms like mine after being diagnosed celiac and strictly gluten free? The last episode I had like this was yesterday, after I ate a certified gluten-free coconut macaroon with a little chocolate on it. I have eaten coconut and chocolate before with no issue,  so I didn't see how I could all of a sudden have such a strong response.

      The sensitivity of people with coeliac disease varies greatly between individuals. The generally accepted as safe limit for most people is 10 milligrams per day. This equates to a piece of bread the size of a small pea. Some people report that they are more sensitive than this, but others can very occasionally eat a normal gluten containing meal without reacting. I don't think that touching or throwing bread around would lead to you ingesting enough to cause a reaction. There are case reports of farmers with coeliac disease reacting to the dust from gluten-containing animal feed but they were inhaling large amounts of dust over a long period of time in barns. Perhaps you episodes are caused by a reaction to something other than gluten? Have you had your antibody levels checked to see whether you are still being exposed to gluten?
