I May Have Screwed Up

So a week ago, on Tuesday I went to the dentist. I had a root canal and extraction and everything went swimmingly. I was feeling worse than normal afterwards but who wouldn't after having both done at the same time! After two days I was halfway through my bottle of narcotics and thinking, this is bad. When I ran out I was like, so it'll stop hurting now right? He'd totally give me enough pills. No doctor would send someone home without enough pain medication. I got to spend all day Sunday feeling like I'd been bashed in the face with a baseball bat, which was pretty much the opposite of awesome.

So this is where the screw up comes in. In total desperation I call the dentist this morning and head in to the earliest available appointment. It takes him all of two seconds to tell me it's a dry socket which means the bone is exposed which isn't dangerous, just extremely painful. (DUH!) He packed the gaping hole in my mouth with some medicine soaked gauze and sent me home. It tastes SO bad! I also have no clue what it is or what is in it. At this point, it's already in there so if I screwed up it's too late to unscrew up and it's helping with the pain. I don't know what to do. He said that it could be in there for up to three days. I don't want it to hurt any more, I haven't slept well in so long. First it was the itching from the allergic reaction to the antibiotic and now it's been the pain. I just want to fall asleep like a person and wake up to something other than my face throbbing with the beat of my heart.

ive had dry socket before and what he put in there is probably gauze soaked in clove oil. That is what my dentist did! And in a pinch you can do the same thing without the dentist. You can find clove oil at the store and use gauze or a cotton ball. Good luck!

I knew I knew that taste! I used to smoke clove cigarettes on occasion. That could also explain my sudden and nearly uncontrollable urge to SMOKE SOMETHING. Which I assumed was because I am in so much pain and had work very hard not to hit the dentist as he explained to me in such a patronizing way how painful dry socket is. Thank you sir, but I'm sure I could explain it better with this 2 by 4... just hold still.

I do feel much better thank you. Knowing it is clove oil and not some mystery gluten eases my mind. I'm not too scared to go to the store later now.

My dad had an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.  Fortunately, it was discovered during an exam.  The doctor could feel my dad's heart beating in his stomach.  The aneurysm burst when the doctor first touched it in surgery.  Since he was already hooked up to the bypass machine, my dad survived ten more years.  Close call! Triple A's can press on the nerves in the spinal cord causing leg pain.  I'm wondering if bowing the head might have increased the pressure on an aneurysm and then the nerves.   https://gulfcoastsurgeons.com/understanding-abdominal-aortic-aneurysm-symptoms-and-causes/ Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Presenting as a Claudication https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4040638/

You have an odd story there. To me, the mechanical trigger suggests a mechanical problem and lower leg pain is a classic sciatica symptom. The fact that the clear mechanical linkage is no longer there does not take away from the fact that it was - maybe something shifted and the simple alignment is no longer there. There's also a good chance I am wrong and it's something else entirely. @Scott Adams's mention of shingles is interesting. It seems possible but unlikely to me, but who knows. However, I am writing here to reinforce the idea of getting the shingles vaccine. Ask anyone who has ever had shingles and they will bend your ear telling you how bad it is. I watched my wife go through it and it scared the bejeebers out of me. Even if you had the chicken pox vaccine, you really want to get the shingles vaccine.

Oddly this effect has gone now, just happened yesterday evening, the nerve pain is now back to its usual "unpredictable" random self again - but that was the only time I ever had some mechanical trigger for it, don't know why! There's no (or wasn't) actual pain in my neck - it was inside the leg, but when I looked down, now though, the leg pain just comes and goes randomly as before again.

I had MRI scan a few years ago showing everything normal, and now it's no longer triggering the nerve pain when I bow my head today - it only seemed to happen yesterday, and that was the only time it happened! Just seemed weird as no movement has caused my usual nerve pain before. It's normally just random.

Very good pizzeria with small dining room in back of the restaurant. The owner's daughter has celiac & they have gluten free pizza & a gluten free menu. Some items from the regular menu can be made gluten free also. They have a lunch menu which we ordered from & my chicken with spinach & mozzarella over gluten-free penne was delicious. They also have Tuesday night pasta specials & Thursday night chicken pasta specials. We plan on going back for dinner soon.
