Neg Iga, Borderline Igg?

I got my IgA and IgG results from my doctor yesterday. They were the only celiac tests I got.

IgA was 8 (normal would be up to 25)

IgG was 23.4 (normal would be up to 30, according to her)

I've heard though that normal for both is up to 25, so I'm considering myself borderline positive on the IgG.

From what I understand from this board, these tests aren't terribly accurate and if I'm not eating enough gluten, they may not show anything.

I have ordered a TTG test kit from York Labs so I'm waiting on that.

If I remember right, IgA is more specifically geared toward celiac.

But what is IgG looking for?

Nancy

IgA and IgG are more towards detecting a problem with gluten in the body.

Total Serum IgA will rule out IgA deficiency...if you are IgA deficient then the IgA testing would not be accurate so this rules that out.

tTG and EMA are more towards damage and are the more specific tests for celiac.

All of those tests should be done. I would not rule out celiac by the tests you had done.

The IgG is the least specific of all the tests.

I would also get a copy of the blood tests. Different labs have different ranges of what is normal.

They didn't do Total Serum IgA. It was anti-gliadin IgA. I'm guessing that's different?

The IgA and IgG were the only tests that she was able to find on the lab forms, of the five full-panel celiac tests.

She's still sending me to a GI specialist to get a biopsy, so maybe he can send me to a lab that can do the additional tests. That, combined with the tTG from York should give me an idea of whether I can possibly rule out celiac. No matter the test results, I'm still planning on going gluten-free to see if I have improvement just based on that.

Then if I'm not feeling better, I'm going to get some food allergy testing done to see what is going on. Because whether or not I've got celiac, SOMETHING is going on with my digestion. If it's not celiac, I'm starting to suspect that it's some type of food allergy or intolerance. And actually, even if it is celiac, I'm going to get the allergy testing done.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
