Can someone help me I've been Celiac for about a year now (since I've found out) but it has made me severely underweight and I still am having problems putting on weight. Does anyone have any advice or help.

It can be a long process. First, you have to heal your insides. If they are not able to absorb nutrients because of the damage that celiac has caused you will not gain weight. I have been gluten free for over a year and I am NOW beginning to put on weight. Six years ago, (sorry to say) I was a 12 pant. Last year, I was buying size 4s. I went shopping today and bought a size 8.

Once you recover from the damage, your body will put on weight, but it may take some time. Be patient and dilegent by being gluten free and you will gradually feel better and your body will heal itself.

As much as this disease has it's burdens, it also has it's rewards.....You can heal yourself.

Keep on the diet and I can assure you that your weight will return. :)

I lost so much weight I was put in the hospital on a feeding tube. Are you eating enough calories and fat? A lot of doctors and RDs recommend something like Ensure (I didn't have it because I am casein-free). Have you asked your doc at all or seen an RD? What are you eating in a normal day?

When I was diagnosed I was sent to a nutritionist who was no help at all cause she didn't even really know about the disease. I felt that when I got diagnost that they just basically told me and sent me on my way to fend for myself.

I feel as though I eat lots but maybe I'm just not eating the right type of stuff to help put on the weight.

I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. A typical day for me would be morning banana, bowl of cereal, mixed fruit. Then lunch soup and sandwich. And then dinner some type of meat potatoes and some type of vegetables.

I thought Ensure had Gluten in it?

you defnitely need to make sure you are getting calorie dense foods in there.. if you are trying to gain weight, you have to make sure you aren't having a deficit with potential exercise concerning calories in vs. out.

I would suggest adding some snacks in between meals to ensure you are getting enough calories.. if you can tolerate nuts and nut butters those have helped me maintain. Another good snack choice is a fruit smoothie, made with fresh fruit, yogurt, icecream whatever you like. adding more calories will help you. also try eating something before bed, a bowl of cereal or ice cream. It will come back all in time, good luck to you and if you need any other help let me know!

Thanks for the tips. It's good to know their are other people who go through the same things. Sometimes you feel totally out of wack and no one around you understands and thinks that you just don't eat enough. It's a very hard disease to live with, but it could be worse!!!

Boost or Ensure could help you add calories to your diet. I drink Boost, and all of the flavors EXCEPT Chocolate Malt are gluten-free. I lost about 12 pounds after going gluten-free, and drinking a Boost everyday helped me to stop loosing weight. It also helped me get some vitamins. I am pretty sure Ensure is gluten-free.

How much Ensure can you drink in one day? I am finding that a lot of food is totally disagreeing with me and I feel nauseous after every meal. I am trying -- desperately -- to gain weight so this is not a good thing. The only thing I can keep down is Ensure. So I'm drinking a lot of it. Is this wise?

Bread has about 8 g of protein per 100 g, so a piece of bread weighing 125 mg contains 10 mg of gluten. Bread has a density of about 0.25 g/ml, so 0.5 ml of bread contains 10 mg of gluten - i.e. a bread ball 1 cm in diameter. I think it would be unlikely to ingest this much from throwing bread out for the birds.

Sciatica came to mind for me as well. You might want to get some imaging done on your C-spine.

Maybe this is sciatica? When mine acts up a little, I switch my wallet from one back pocket to the other. this isn't a substitute for more serious medical help, but for me it's a bandaid.

OK so I just learned something completely new about this for the first time in years, that is REALLY WEIRD. One of my nerves that likes to "burn" or whatever is doing it every time I bow my head! I mean it is completely repeatable. Literally every time. Once my head goes beyond a certain angle *boom*. Nerve goes mental (lower right leg pain). What the hell. I've never seen a direct trigger such as this before that I can recall. The pain was the usual type I get from this problem - I suspect somehow the head movement was interrupting descending inhibition processes, causing the pain to leak through somehow.

I've only made this a couple of times but it's really easy and I love the flavor. If you can, use all of the ingredients to get the full palette of flavors. I use fresh or canned tomatoes and I don't worry about peeling them. If you don't have harissa, there are replacement recipes online. If you don't have the greens, I suggest adding a little chopped baby spinach or celery leaves to add a dash of green color to this red dish. Best eaten in first couple days because flavor tends to fade. Leftovers are still good, but not as vibrant. Ingredients 2 medium eggplants, partially peeled and cut into cubes (original recipe says 1 in, but I prefer 1/2 to 3/4 in) 2 tomatoes, peeled and crushed 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped or minced 1 tablespoon fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons spicy harissa (I use Mina brand) 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice 1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional) Salt to taste Preparation     • Heat olive oil in skillet or pot over medium heat. Add all ingredients and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cover and cook on low heat for an additional 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.       • Serve warm or cold as a side or with bread for dipping. Enjoy! Original recipe is here, if you want to see photos: mina.co/blogs/recipes/zaalouk-moroccan-eggplant-salad
