hi everyone-

i know that this topic has been beat to death on this site, but i am getting more and more confused with my symptoms.

i was wondering: 1.) if someone is gluten intolerant, will they have a reaction everytime they eat gluten?

2.) once beginning a gluten free diet, how long(typically) does it take before you see results if you are in fact gluten intolerant?

thanks!

1) no... some people don't have any symptoms at all, ever... the only reason they know they are celiac is because a first degree relative was dx'ed with it, then they were screened for it and the tests (including biopsy) were positive

2)everyone is different. it depends on many different criteria, age at dx, level of damage, other food intolerances or other autoimmune disorders... as for me, I started noticing improvements after about 6 months, but it took a good 2 years before I really started to feel "human"...

my best advice would be to get tested if you haven't already (if you haven't already started the gluten-free diet either)... and then if you do decide to try the diet, keep an accurate food journal and monitor EVERYTHING you eat and every reaction or non reaction and maybe you will notice a pattern... you could start by keeping a journal BEFORE you start the diet, keep on your normal diet for a while (don't change ANYTHING)... then after a few weeks of that, try the diet and keep documenting everything in your food journal. Good luck!

Hi,

I quess my first question to you would be do you have any symptoms which you think might be due to gluten intolerance? Second if you do have symptoms how often do you have them? Third how severe are these symptoms. I have heard all types of time frames as to how one may respond to the diet. You must realize that we are talking about 100% elimination of gluten when starting the diet. For me I had symptoms off and on for almost ten years. I had severe symptoms for the last 2 months before diagnosis. Once I was told to go on the diet my main symptoms (bloating, gas, D, reflux) went away in only a couple of days. It did take about 3 months for me to gain back enough weight that I started to feel normal again. I think one of the worse mistakes one can make when doing the diet challange is to go on and off in the beginning. The other would be to not stay on long enough to give your body a chance to respond. After saying that I'm sure your question to me is how long is long enough. I would think that if someone is 100% compliant then I would expect to see some type of improvement in a couple of weeks to a month. Once again everyone is different.

As for your question about having a reaction every time you ingest gluten I don't know because to the best of my knowledge I have had no gluten in my diet the past 16 months. As a result I have had none of my previous symptoms. Hope this helps.

Tom-

I have very vague symptoms that come in cycles, so at first I thought they were related to my menstrual cycle. But after I logged timing, etc- there was no relation. Every few weeks, I feel liek I am just about to get sick- feverish(although no fever when recorded), tired(need to sleep 16 hrs, but I am ALWAYS tired and lethargic- i need like 10 hrs of sleep every night), muscle aches and pains, joint pains, itchy, sores in mouth. and the GI stuff: chronic constipation, bloating, awful gas, nausea. But my GP did antibody levels and they were all NL. But after reading posts here, I thought I would try the gluten free diet to see if I had diet response rather than have a biopsy. So I was just wondering if these symptoms were all in my head as they are not consistent but come in waves- like sometimes I can eat pizza and i am fine, but if i eat pretzles i am so itchy i need to take benedryl. i guess i am just trying to dins some answers.

Yes I would try the diet if I were you. Basically it can't hurt. Be aware of hidden gluten in things like toothpaste, mouthwash, soap etc. Also don't lick any envelopes. Good luck.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
