at my wits end

Where Do I Turn?

Recommended Posts

Greeting everyone! First time poster here and am at my wits end. I have a happy 18 month old girl that has had chronic diarreha for 3 months. We have eliminated all dairy, sugar, etc. Doctor has tested the stool for a "bunch" of tests, but everything comes back negative. He is now sending us to a specialists, but I am just not sure if that is the right thing to do.

A little history. We have a 7 year old boy that went through all kinds of tests as an infant due to excessive vomiting and constipation only to put him through test after test and nothing. He just grew out of it at 2 years.

Our little girl also had reflux as in infant, spitting up constantly but that ended quickly at 6 months. She is healthy and happy and loves to eat. We have been limiting her liquids and trying to feed her very bland foods. This is making her quite cranky, but overall she seems fine.

Her diarreha is explosive at times (up the front and back), is very foul smelling and at times looks to be greasy and today it looked as if it had a "gel" in it.

Any thoughts? Am I in the right place?

Are there any digestive issues in your family or your husbands. Celiac is genetic.

With that question for you, I will defer to the other mothers with children with celiac.

Hang in there until morning, the calvary will show up.

Thank you for the reply Momma Goose. No, I am not aware of any particular digestive issues in our families. My mother did have colitis in the last 70's, but other than that, I am not aware.

I am open to ideas. Thanks again!

it's possible that it could be related to Celiac or a gluten intolerance problem. It certainly sounds like you could be describing my daughter's diapers when she was an infant. It could be something else too (what, I don't know... I'm inclined to believe a lot of these kinds of issues are dietary related).

You can either choose to go through a pediatric gastroenterologist and have BOTH of your children screened for Celiac (Keeping in mind the tests can only confirm it, they cannot rule it out ever). OR you can simply try the gluten free diet with your children and see if it makes a difference.

My daughters blood tests for Celiac were negative, but as soon as we put her on the gluten-free diet she started to improve miraculously. I certainly remember the explosive diarrhea and the horrible up the back messes... ugh... I feel for you.
