I'm Not Sure...

I posted here earlier this week mentioning that my biopsy was scheduled for Monday...well I have had it and of course dont remember at thing!!! Well, I have not gotten my results back as of yet and I am still eating small amounts of Gluten. I have never really gone completely Gluten free b/c I am very rarely sick, I get outbreaks (as I call them) once sometimes twice a year and they last for a week or two and then they are gone and I had always eaten a bland siet while sick..so dry toast!!! I live for Rice Crisy treats and eat chips, I very rarely eat bread or baking...not a flour person to begin with so its bazzar that I would come down with Celiac. My blood work came back on the higher side and that is the only reason we think that it is Celiac..I have always been diagnosed as IBS. So I guess what I am wondering is do you think that is Celiac if I can eat gluten on a regular basis and hardly EVER get sick. Two mornings this week we have had Waffles, today I had an ice cream cone, rice crispys for breakfast and now I have made rice crispys. I have my follow up next thurs. So I am not going to change anything until I know for sure. Also, I see that alot of people have other allergies too, I drink alot of milk and have alot of other dairy and these have necer bothered me. I am a bit overwhelmed reading all these posts b/c it seems that Gluten is in everything, I read something about Birth control pills...well I am starting mine tomorrow and the pharmacy said that there shouldnt be gluten in those, I am really confused but I am happy that there is som much information on this site to read.

Just in case, my symptoms include...gas, bloating, constipation, loose stools. Sounds like Celiac but also sounds like IBS, so I am confused. I would think that if you were allergic to something and you came in contact with it you would get sick right away..right???

Thanks for listening.

Yes, those symptoms sound like celiac.

Celiac is often misdiagnosed with IBS!!!!

Not all celiacs have symptoms....I think that the diet is hardest for those who don't have symtoms! That said if your biopsy is positive and you go gluten-free, your inner body WILL heal....you may not know it's affecting your bowles but celiac does!!!

Do you have any other symtoms...such as fatigue, fuzzy thinking, depression ect????

Good luck with your follow up appointment.

Yes, it sounds like celiac is a possibility, and yes, you could be able to eat gluten and not have a strong reaction, or your reaction may not be digestive.

NEVER trust "there shouldn't be gluten in ______"

Demand your pharmacist checks or ask for the manufacturer's contact so you can find out.

There are a lot of things "gluten shouldn't be in" but unfortunately it is in a lot of odd places and if you do have celiac disease, then you do need to make sure.

All the best figuring out what's going on.

Also wanted to add that you may not realize that you are having symptoms. I didn't think mine were out of the ordinary or contected to gluten in any way until after I was diagnosed...once I went gluten-free I thought back and realized everything!!!

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
