Constantly Needing The Toilet

My boyfriends has just been pre-diagnosed with Celiac Disease. He has seen the specialist and has to go back the 11th of June for his endoscopy just to confirm it.

He has been Gluten free for about 10 days but says he is getting no better.

He has been off work for almost 3 months now. His symptoms are feeling like he needs the loo (no2) all the time. Sometimes he does and sometimes not. He hasn't been to work as walking and car travel makes him feel like he really needs to go and is very uncomfortable. I'm really concerned about him, he snaps at me if I try to get him to go anywhere, saying I don't know how it feels but he's been off work for a long time now and I don't really know what to do.

Any knowledge anyone has would be of great help to me.

In many cases, it can take weeks or months to see improvement from a gluten-free diet. However, there may very well be other food intolerances, especially at first. One of the most common of these is lactose intolerance, so it is strongly advisable to avoid dairy for awhile too, and reintroduce later, to see how it goes. Some other things to consider avoiding are soy, eggs, nuts, corn, and nightshades.

Perhaps others will have further insight for you.

I hope you get the answers you need.

Thanks for your advise I did pass on the advise about staying away from diary but he hasn't carried it out.

He still no better, and is getting a lot of sharp pains in his in his abdomen. Is this normal? You need to get worst before you get better?

If he does not give up all dairy & soy he might not get better. That is just like pouring salt on a wound.

He needs to be eating a very plain whole foods diet. & the kitchen/house should be completely gluten-free, too much chance of CC if you take gluten foods in there. Just get everything out of the kitchen, then if he wants dairy he will have to walk or drive to get it! ;)

for some men it is very hard for them to change the way they eat. They do not like to be told they have to give up a certain food or food group. You might have to adopt a tough love policy with him & let him suffer. While you go to social events, movies etc...

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
