Accidental Gluten At Applebees

I have been totally gluten-free since early February when I got the celiac diagnosis after 2 years of being sick. I have followed the diet totally and have had no gluten since and have been feeling much better. Yesterday a working lunch meeting was held at Applebee's. I was a bit unsure about what to eat so spoke with the server, explained my condition and how to prepare my food. I ordered a plain grilled chicken breast, no seasonings and asked for it to be prepared in a separate clean pan not on the regular grill. Within and hour I was back at work and extremely ill, with the same symptoms as before the gluten free diet except 100 time worse. Once I was able to stand up straight from the pain and cramping, stay out of the bathroom long enough I went home, took some medicine and curled up on the couch with my heating pad. I was up and down most of the night with pain and extreme diarrhea. Today I went to work tho not feeling great, extremely fatigued and still having pain. I didn't eat a bite of food all day, so when I came home I grilled myself a plain pork chop and had a bit of rice pasta. Still having diarrhea and pain. We are due to fly out of state on Thursday and I am very concerned if this will pass before the trip!

Has anyone had this problem after having no gluten for a few months and if so what can I do to get past it? I am sure the Chicken was prepared on the same grill with gluten products and that is what caused the problem. Is it normal to have such an extreme reaction after having no gluten for 3 months?

Well it certainly sounds like your meal wasn't gluten-free. My reactions got much worse after going gluten-free. I hope you feel better soon!

Applebee's is known for having a non-friendly gluten-free attitude. They flat out say not to eat at there restaurant.

It sounds like you got glutened to me. If the D continues try taking some immodium to slow things up a bit. But don't take the liquid immodium it's not gluten-free.

I am new to this site<found it today. I actually had this issue yesterday at work. Everyone I work with (in a hospital) know That I cannot have gluten and they have become very aware of hidden gluten for me. Yesterday the hospital had lunch catered and someone picked up my lunch. It was supposed to be safe, but in 10 minutes, before I finished lunch, I knew. After being free since December, the attack is unbelievable! I have eaten nothing but fruit today. I feel for you. Just go bland and drink lots of fluids. Feel better soon.

Their chicken is not gluten-free. I will not order chicken in a restaurant unless I know they make it from scratch. Better to have a hamburger patty.

      My dad had an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.  Fortunately, it was discovered during an exam.  The doctor could feel my dad's heart beating in his stomach.  The aneurysm burst when the doctor first touched it in surgery.  Since he was already hooked up to the bypass machine, my dad survived ten more years.  Close call!       You have an odd story there. To me, the mechanical trigger suggests a mechanical problem and lower leg pain is a classic sciatica symptom. The fact that the clear mechanical linkage is no longer there does not take away from the fact that it was - maybe something shifted and the simple alignment is no longer there. There's also a good chance I am wrong and it's something else entirely. @Scott Adams's mention of shingles is interesting. It seems possible but unlikely to me, but who knows. However, I am writing here to reinforce the idea of getting the shingles vaccine. Ask anyone who has ever had shingles and they will bend your ear telling you how bad it is. I watched my wife go through it and it scared the bejeebers out of me. Even if you had the chicken pox vaccine, you really want to get the shingles vaccine.

      Oddly this effect has gone now, just happened yesterday evening, the nerve pain is now back to its usual "unpredictable" random self again - but that was the only time I ever had some mechanical trigger for it, don't know why! There's no (or wasn't) actual pain in my neck - it was inside the leg, but when I looked down, now though, the leg pain just comes and goes randomly as before again.

      I had MRI scan a few years ago showing everything normal, and now it's no longer triggering the nerve pain when I bow my head today - it only seemed to happen yesterday, and that was the only time it happened! Just seemed weird as no movement has caused my usual nerve pain before. It's normally just random.

      Very good pizzeria with small dining room in back of the restaurant. The owner's daughter has celiac & they have gluten free pizza & a gluten free menu. Some items from the regular menu can be made gluten free also. They have a lunch menu which we ordered from & my chicken with spinach & mozzarella over gluten-free penne was delicious. They also have Tuesday night pasta specials & Thursday night chicken pasta specials. We plan on going back for dinner soon.
