A few weeks ago I was having anxiety attacks and burping due to a nervous habbit. I found out my mother has cancer. So the GI doctor did an endoscopy and biopsy. I had a blood test to confim. To find out I have Celiac. I can not believe this because I've never had any types of problems with anything. He put me on a glutan free diet and I became very sick with all the celiac symptoms. Went back to my family doc and she put me back on my diet and to cut back a bit on glutan. She felt I have no symptoms and we should just monitor this. The GI Doc feels this could be early stages and there will not be any signs, maybe five years from now. This diet is making me sicker then ever. The GI Doc wanted me to speak with a dietician. I spoke to, two dieticians and they both felt if I'm not having a problem don't worry about it just cut back and if I do have a problem then I should be on this diet. I have done a lot of reading and some people never have any side affects but most do. I feel great now and I've cut back a lot. I do not know what to think? There are a lot of children and adults with this problem. Why is there no meds or vaccines?

If you are celiac and you continue eating gluten you will die prematurely by 10 or 20 years in intense pain from intestinal cancer. You can of course get a second opinion from another gastroenterologist to confirm the diagnosis. Anyone telling you that if you aren't having symptoms then you don't have to bother with the diet doesn't know what they're talking about. Many, many of us are silent celiacs, having no apparent gastrointestinal symptoms whatever. That doesn't mean that damage isn't occurring. The fact that the gastroenterologist was able to see damage should clue you in. The anxiety you are suffering may well be due to vitamin B12 malabsorption, a very common side effect of celiac disease. Sublingual B12 supplements (that means you put them under your tongue) can help.

Many people feel worse at first when going gluten-free. Some show signs of withdrawal symptoms. You need to give the diet a fair try; you need to stick with it all your life, really. It's totally a matter of life or death.
