How Long Does It Take To Have Food Run Through?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I have always wondered and now especially, how long it takes for food to travel through your body? Once you eat something, how long does it take to come out the other end? I don't mean when your glutened, I know how long that takes! I was wondering for other food intolerances, when I unknowingly eat something that doesn't have a full glutening reaction by gives me a little upset or discomfort. I would like to know how far back I have to think about what might have caused the problem.

Hope someone knows-I know there are a lot of very intelligent people on this board.

Love the picture that goes with this one: Food Transit Time

I have generally read, though somewhat varying numbers, somewhere between 12 and 48 hours, depending on the individual, the food, and the general amount of fiber in the diet (more fiber = shorter transit time). Longer is possible, but I understand that to be the *most* common.
