Iron Deficiency/ Hair Loss

Recommended Posts

I have noticed quite a bit of hair loss pre-diagnosis. Now that I'm following a strict gluten free diet and am starting to absorb iron and other nutrients, should I expect my hair to be healthier and stronger?

I have been iron deficient since 2006. Ferritin never above 10 and lowest was 4. I finaly started tolerating oral iron supplementation this August and I have raised my ferritin to 33. Still a ways to go but definately better. I shed a lot of hair, but recently I have noticed the hair loss has decreased and I have new hair growth coming in! ;) It does take awhile depending how deficient you are/were.

Me:
Celiac disease(positive blood work/biopsy- 10/2008), gluten free oat intolerent, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis/Disease, Raynaud's Disease

DS2(age 9):
celiac disease(positive IgA tTG, no biopsy- 11/2010)

DS1(age 13):
repeated negative bloodwork and negative EGD/biopsy. Started on a gluten free trial(8/2011). He has decided to stay gluten free due to all of the improvements he has experienced on the diet.
