Just Got Back From Las Vegas

Alright...here we go...

I researched as much as I could online, found some good info, but until you get to Las Vegas, you don't really know just how far away things are! I found all kinds of great options before I left, just to find out they were on the other end of the strip or REALLY expensive. So, here's my experience, maybe it will help someone out. I stayed at the Palazzo which is part of the Venetian. Pretty much in the middle of the strip. So here, we go!

First night I went to "Dos Caminos Mexican Restaurant" in the Palazzo. Wonderful service and very knowledgeable of gluten free diets. I mentioned my gluten free diet while ordering ALL of the items I will list in this post. We ordered the Guacamole first, absolutely delicious! And, since the chips were not ok, he brought out a small plate of little made to order corn tortillas. I had cheese enchiladas with corn tortillas and rice. It was all a great first meal in Vegas! Next day for lunch I ate at Harrah's "Flavors the buffet", I spoke with the head chef and he walked thru the entire line showing me what I could eat. Well, needless to say, pretty sure I got glutened here. I was sick about 3-4 hours after my meal, thru the next day. I avoided buffets from there on out, thinking maybe I got CC'ed. So, for dinner I got Chipotle to be safe (ate at Chipotle twice since it's pretty safe and near the hotel). The next day I ate at the "Grand Lux Cafe" in the Palazzo, excellent! The waitress seemed genuinely concerned about my diet and gave me fruit free of charge, instead of the normal bread/floured hashbrowns. Then the manager came over to tell me they are trying to get a gluten free menu for the restaurant ASAP since they do have quite a few options, and lots of gluten free eaters. I ate there twice for breakfast during our stay, both times I got the Garden Fresh Omelette and it was GREAT! That night I ate at Outback, just to be safe again. Then, the last night there I ate at Gilley's in Treasure Island. I had the Texas Chili Nachos, but substituted the beefy chili with the veggie chili. That was also wonderful! Though, I spoke with the manager and he told me to talk to my waitress about my gluten free diet and she could help me. Well, she had NO idea what I was talking about, and when I asked about the cheese and meat on the nachos, I had to almost force her just ask a chef if it would be ok for me. So, I hear some people have no problem with buffets in Vegas...I think I got glutened by the one I ate at, but I guess it's a chance we take sometimes with buffets! Hope this is helpful to someone! Thanks for reading :)

AND I forgot to mention....I went to Margaritaville...they couldn't tell me ANYTHING was gluten free. Basically I could have gotten lettuce with nothing on it. None of the meats are ok....just FYI!

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
