Broken Diet Over Last Year

I'm glad that I found this site as I need a bit of support at the moment. I was diagnosed celiac almost 6 years ago and was very sick at the time.

I stuck to my diet 100%, went to uni ( against my doctors advice, he said I was too sick!) as a first time mature age student, got well, and now have a whole new career which I just love !! :D

The problem is about 12 months ago I broke my diet and then very gradually I started to sneak a bit of food with gluten in it occaisionally and recently Ive' been doing this almost daily.

As you would expect I am getting really sick again and I'm really angry at myself for allowing this to happen, expecially as I was someone who was really particular about sticking to my diet.

So basically after waking up with terrible stomach cramps just now I decided this is it! it stops right now! and I went online looking for somewhere to get a bit of moral support.

I'm looking forward to to staring to feel well again and hope to be able to contribute something positive to the forums

cheers Louie

I'm sorry you're not feeling well :( It's easy to forget how sick gluten can make us when we are healthy. I got a little sloppy myself around the house not too long ago by not labeling my stuff gluten-free and by being less careful about cleaning. I got sick around that time and it was probably because of my sloppiness.

welcome to the board, hope you find the support you need here!

I have been gluten-free for over two years, and lately I've been a little less careful about dining out and in the past month have had at least 2 instances of being glutened. I was very angry at myself and am still having to deal with the physical repercussions of not being as vigilant with my diet. I'm with you, this has got to stop now. I've got to stop being so careless and pay more attention. I need to plan ahead better and not get stuck in Chattanooga TN with my only choice for a potentially safe meal being a Chili's and despite great service and effort still getting ill for days... LOL!!! (Just the most recent example!)

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
