Celiac Game

I've been thinking for some time that I wanted to take on a little coding project at home, since my current work tasks have exercised zero of my coding skills. Originally, the thought was to do something along the lines of Open Original Shared Link, but better at keeping track of recipes, since there's so much cooking from scratch on this diet (my take on this diet, anyway). But then someone posted that cute little game for identifying hidden gluten in the kitchen, and there were comments on it being a great start, but missing so much, and I thought... hey, there's a coding project!

So, the thought that I had was to come up with an online game - or series of games - that teaches about the disease. It could be like the game that is already up on that site, it could be more like a quiz type thing, it could be more like a board game, it could be more like a puzzle game... I just don't know yet.

What I'd like the most help with is figuring out what sort of information should it cover? If you were new to the disease, what would you want to see? If you were moderately familiar with it? What would you find helpful or fun to see in an educational game? Any ideas or suggestions would be great!

Very cool... uhh, I don't know where to start. Just saying that it's great that you'll do something like that for us and keep us posted! I'll sleep on this one.

Oh...if you do something similar when it comes to reading labels, you should have a few options, maybe like: gluten-free, not gluten-free, or phone the company. Also, maybe say that you have to say each ingredient is gluten-free or not, so it's methodical (or make the person identify the questionable and non-gluten-free ingredients.

I'll still think some more on this one.

What a neat idea, when I first read the subject line my thought was board game... :P I'm not sure I know what you mean by coding?

I could visualize a kitchen where you could point and click on different items to identify possible gluten and contamination risks... am I on the right track??

For instance, in a shared kitchen, the coffee pot being too close to the "bad" toaster... recipe cards and books dusted with wheat flour...? That sort of thing that people may not consider.

Hope this helps! :D

what a geek I am ;-)

"coding" means writing a computer program. :-) I'd use Java (a programming language) so it was able to play over the 'net on anyone's operating system.

If you are embarking on a project like this, could you please make it work in metric units as well as the feet, inches, pounds and ounces etc. still being used in the USA! (and use killojoules instead of calories!)

I find grams, litres, millimeters, meters etc a whole lot easier to calculate.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
