Hi everybody. I've been checking on some of my over-the-counter drugs to make sure they are gluten-free and wanted to post some information that I found this morning:

I had a severe reaction to Benedryl and had to go to the doctor yesterday, but not due to gluten. Still, I'm checking everything now for gluten.

Very helpful! I feel like medications are the one food group which you constantly have to check up on for gluten. Our pediatrician gave us a good general rule of thumb for medications as well - the biggest threat for gluten in medications is with capsules. I guess the capsule itself sometimes is made with gluten.

Yes, I still forget sometimes and buy generics and don't check to see if they have gluten in them. Playing catch up right now. I'm taking a generic Zyrtec and haven't had a reaction to it, but haven't been able to find out the name of the manufacturer. Also, bought a non-coated aspirin (NSAID) from CVS that I have to call about.

They use fillers to create the capsules, so it's possible that gluten could be contained as an inactive ingredient.

      The ulcers are prepyloric ulcers. Not sure if that makes any difference.

      I had what was termed "lesions," and normally ulcers are in the stomach, rather than the small intestines. I'm not sure why they would want you to have her continue to eat gluten, since she had a positive blood test, but as her doctor said, if she is uncomfortable and having symptoms why not have her go gluten-free at this point? If her symptoms improve, it would be another indicator that she has celiac disease and/or gluten sensitivity. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
