Is Celiac A Possibility?

<_< MMM, Right where do I begin, My son is 5 months old now and after diarrea and really restless for 8 weeks my doctor advised milk intollerance or milk allergy as a maybe, and put him on soya milk. He is now on soya milk and things seemed to be looking up, until 8 days ago where the diarrea started all over again, and boy is it smelly ( sorry guys but all effects need to be listed) its smells sour.

He has had nothing else, just his soya milk.

I read that celiac usually begins when gluten is introduced into the diet, and when he was about 10 weeks I put some rusk in his bottle at bed time ( I listened to my mum) I know that you shouldn't do this but after no sleep I was desperate!!! then thats when the diarrea started.

My main question is, if it was celiac, would diarrea still be happening when he is on soya milk and nothing else.

Thanks, and look forward to some responses.

Symptoms are broad with celiac. Some people get them and others do not.

When someone has symptoms and goes gluten free it does take time for the symptoms to go away. At 16 years of age when I was diagnosed it took me 8 months to get back to normal. It depends on age-usually the younger you are the quicker you heal because over years the damage usually accumulates and that is why it takes longer.

Also testing in kids under 2 for celiac can be inaccurate so the diet is the best way to go for kids younger.

Is he off of milk or gluten or both and if so for how long? Gluten is hidden in so many things and you have to make sure he is 100% gluten free.

Kaiti, Thanks for that, his soya milk is gluton, milk protein and lactose free, the last time he had anything different was 3 weeks ago, within 2 days of being on the soya milk, he was more settled & the diarrea stopped, it has been the last 8 days that it has all started again.

I believe my 5 year old might have had something to do with it, she decided that he would like to try some strawberry milkshake 2 days before it all started again, she did not give him a lot (he was wearing most of it). and he has not been right since, could such a small amount of milk trigger it all off again.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
