I am planning on visiting India (Delhi) in 6 months. Has anyone gone and been able to eat?

There will be lots of things you can eat: Dal (lentils cooked with many different curries depending on where your cook is from) aloo (cabbage) potato dishes just to name a few... Chicken Tikka and lamb dishes--you will just need to avoid Chapati (a wheat tortilla) and Nan (a bread) that comes at nearly every meal. There are also Pappadum which are a southern speciality that look like a thin tortilla made from garbanzo bean flour...also so somosas (fried savories) can be made exclusivly of the same flour--but sometimes contain wheat too.

Wow - great info. My hubby and I are looking into traveling there sometime next year. This info helps a lot - I am not very familiar with Indian food. Have you traveled there??

Have a great trip "justme"!

My Indian neighbor made Dosas for me. It is made from fermented rice and ghee. The batter is poured in a pan and cooked like a crepe and served fresh and hot. They taste like a very thin, cheesy cracker. Very good. Also the one restaurant that I can always get a safe meal at is a local Indian restaurant that serves very simple, homestyle curries. We go there almost every weekend and I'm really nervous when I eat out anywhere else. I'm very thankful for it. So, I hope you have a good experience.

Yes I spent a great deal of time there in the 80's...where do you live? Perhaps trying Indian food out first would be a good idea. You really will have a lot of choices...it's very vegan and Paleo based food

Just be careful about the Indian restaurants in the states. It depends which ones you go to because there can be cross contamination in the tandoori oven with bread being baked there, too, and in the oil that things are fried in could also have fried gluten based items. Do your research before hand to prevent disappointment.

There is an Indian celiac group on yahoo, but it is made up of very few members. Even so, they are from India and the group owner might be able to give you some tips for your travels to the region.

Need to ask about their use of asofoetida in their cooking as this can be wheat based. I understand that the Hing brand is not wheat based.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
