Good MOrning,

I have been wheat free/gluten free for about a month now. Is it normal to lose weight? I've lost close to 8-10 pounds which I guess I don't mind, but I am not really trying. I have not been eating well lately, trying to get everything figured out, but just was wondering if others lost weight when they first started the diet?

I didn't becasue I ate like a pig on doctor's orders (and because my starved body craved calories). Unless, you have other food problems, there's no reason at all not to eat well. Just eat basic meat (lots of it) along with fresh vegetables and fruit, rice, potatoes and corn. Add in other stuff as you figure out what is and isn't safe.

I was really surprised when I saw weight loss because thought I was eating pretty good. I lost 25 pounds in the last 12 weeks and I do need to lose more but like richard mentioned before me, I just stopped the gluten items and ate meat potatoes, veggies and fruit. I found the adjustment really easy and feel soooo much better. I think now my weight will not come off as easy because I am adjusting to all of this but I do worry that I am getting enough calories daily.

Seems logical to me... if your body hasn't been absorbing nutrients properly, it'd be much the same as people that don't eat very often - the body will store everything it can to draw on for energy later. Once you start providing energy on a regular basis, no need to store as much. Make sense? :blink:

When I was first diagnosed I weighed about 175 lbs (overweight for age 19), after the first 6 mo's of being gluten-free I began losing weight steadily. Within the first year I was down to 129 lbs. I now vary between 130 and 137 depending on if I eat anything with substance that week. My nutritionist was worried at worried, but I am healthier now than I was then. I eat when I'm hungry and eat whatever I feel like (gluten-free of course). I was told that now it would be difficult for me to gain weight because I'm vegetarian on top of gluten-free. Talk to a nutritionist if you are really concerned though.

Hi, I lost 72 pounds in 3 months, thats when I got diagnosed, after the diet I continued loosing weight for about a good 3 months just because it took that long for my system to get back to normal. Now I'm at a pretty steady weight. You need to look at the diet were on, its really a very healthy one, so of course were going to weigh less than we did when we ate donuts, pizza, hamburgers. ( Don't mean to tempt anyone with those words). And you have been gluten free for only a month so I doubt very much your body is back to normal and completely healed yet. If you loose a bunch of weight in a short time after being on the diet for a awhile a would then start to look in finding out why? But its sounds pretty normal to me. Good luck.

      Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

      I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

      Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

      Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
