Weird Test Results

Maybe someone out there can help me. I have been gluten-free for about 4 months, was diag in Feb with positive bloodwork and positive biopsy. Anyway, I just had some bloodtests done to test thyroid, etc.

Well the test that came back scary are:

CRP - 9.5 H (High cardiovascular risk)

Homocysteine - 5.0 L (5.4-11.9 is normal range)

Lipoprotein (a) - 302 H (<75 is normal range)

I know all of the above have to do with the heart and that CRP can mean infection. Does anyone else have numbers like these?

My cholesterol is good - 195 (<200)

HDL - 54 (>45)

LDL - 126 (<130)

Triglyceride - 89 (<150

Glucose - 88 (65-99)

Vitamin D3 - 44

Vitamin D2 - <4

TSH - 2.02 (.45-4.50)

T4 - 1.2 ( 0.8-1.7)

T3 - 2.5 - (2.0-4.8)

I didn't get a chance to talk to the doctor. It was a new doctor. I waited for an hour! I asked how much longer the doc would be which they didn't know. I told them I wanted my lab results and my co-pay back and I left.

Looking for a new doc now. Anyone that has a good one is Scottsdale/Phoenix, let me know.

Jenny-- the CRP is a marker for inflammation (you liver puts it out). But the inflammation could be anywhere in your body. My doctor told me that if the number is high, it can indicate Chron's disease (inflammation in the intestine) or heart disease. But it can also be from stuff like arthritis (inflammation in the joints). I don't know why yours specifies the heart. Don't worry until you actually see a real doctor.

My number was on the high side too, before going gluten-free. But it is in the normal range now.

I hope you find a doctor who is easy to see-- I sometimes get so discrouaged with the process. Good for you for thinking to ask for the lab results and the copay!

Hang in there!

Thanks for replying. It is so hard to find a doctor that really knows about Celiac. I got so frustrated waiting on that doctor, I had to walk out. They called me to apologize and of course, set up another appt. I did, but will probably end up cancelling.

My CRP was high also right when I was diagnosed. I am so good about being gluten-free, actually obsessive about it, so I would have thought the number would come down.

Oh well. My mission is to find a new doctor that knows what I'm talking about. :) I know they are out there somewhere!

Jenny your T3 is in the dump. Do you have symptoms of hypothyroid?

Jenny (AZ via TX) Enthusiast

Shay, I do have some symptoms of hypothyroid and that was the main reason I wanted the blood tests. I had read several posts on thyroid and thought I should get checked. Right before being diagnosed, my TSH was over 3 (that has come down). I had never had T3 or T4 checked and really didn't know much about them. I'm mostly tired and have really dry skin. Also have some anxiety.

Thank you for confirming this about the T3. I just want to feel good and be happy again, you know. Also had my other hormones tested as well. I know I am perimenopause (I'm 47). Let the good times roll. I am so thankful I don't have the hot flashes, but have other issues.

Is Armour prescribed for T3 as well as for TSH or T4?

Hey Jenny. Your panel doesn't look too bad. Your lipoprotein a (aka Lp(a)) is simply a type of LDL particle. It happens to be small and denser than the other common type of LDL, lipoprotein B. While Lp(a) has been shown to be linked to heart disease, your LDL is quite normal, so I wouldn't worry much at all....really. Just always try to exercise and eat heart healthy. I have Celiac too. I was diagnosed last December.

Thanks MBJ2217. I had never had bloodwork for lipoprotein (a) but have since heard not to worry too much about it since my other numbers are pretty good. Thanks for the reassurance. I still need to go have some of the other stuff checked and hopefully I'll be good as new! You are so right about the exercising. I had been doing so well and then stopped when my MIL and FIL had a fall. I've been over at their place helping out. MIL just exausts me. She's a little difficult. (That's putting it nicely ha ha). Also, I have to constantly wash my hands over there due to all the gluten. I need to get back to it just to relieve the stress.

Thanks again.

probably not your situation @Mimiof2, but allow me to add one more to @trents list of celiac-mimics: "olmesartan-induced sprue-like enteropathy"

My dad had an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.  Fortunately, it was discovered during an exam.  The doctor could feel my dad's heart beating in his stomach/abdomen.  The aneurysm burst when the doctor first touched it in surgery.  Since he was already hooked up to the bypass machine, my dad survived ten more years.  Close call! Triple A's can press on the nerves in the spinal cord causing leg pain.  I'm wondering if bowing the head might have increased the pressure on an aneurysm and then the nerves.   https://gulfcoastsurgeons.com/understanding-abdominal-aortic-aneurysm-symptoms-and-causes/ Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Presenting as a Claudication https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4040638/

You have an odd story there. To me, the mechanical trigger suggests a mechanical problem and lower leg pain is a classic sciatica symptom. The fact that the clear mechanical linkage is no longer there does not take away from the fact that it was - maybe something shifted and the simple alignment is no longer there. There's also a good chance I am wrong and it's something else entirely. @Scott Adams's mention of shingles is interesting. It seems possible but unlikely to me, but who knows. However, I am writing here to reinforce the idea of getting the shingles vaccine. Ask anyone who has ever had shingles and they will bend your ear telling you how bad it is. I watched my wife go through it and it scared the bejeebers out of me. Even if you had the chicken pox vaccine, you really want to get the shingles vaccine.

Oddly this effect has gone now, just happened yesterday evening, the nerve pain is now back to its usual "unpredictable" random self again - but that was the only time I ever had some mechanical trigger for it, don't know why! There's no (or wasn't) actual pain in my neck - it was inside the leg, but when I looked down, now though, the leg pain just comes and goes randomly as before again.

I had MRI scan a few years ago showing everything normal, and now it's no longer triggering the nerve pain when I bow my head today - it only seemed to happen yesterday, and that was the only time it happened! Just seemed weird as no movement has caused my usual nerve pain before. It's normally just random.
