Will Dh Clear Up Gluten Free?

My dd 4, has been gluten-free for a little over a year. We just gave her gluten for the last month for a biopsy ( she had mny issues which didn't clear up and were looking for other things) In the last 2 weeks she developed a strange rash that looks like the internet pictures of DH that I found. It was in her armpit and side, little blisters that then scabbed over, looked a little like poison ivy or chicken pox, but not quite. So,she is now gluten free again, and the rash seems to be disappearing, though I think now that I saw a few more blistery things. It did itch and burn, but she isn't complianign about it anymore.

does this sound like DH? and most importatnly now that she is gluten free again will it clear up, or is likely to flair up even without gluten?

She does have a history of wicked eczema, but that cleared up 80% off dairy, and all the way off guten!

Thanks,

Patty

If it is DH, it will go away on the gluten-free diet. This might take awhile.

I have seen posters who said it took two or three years before they stopped getting random outbreaks. In my case it took a little less than one year, although I will get a milder type outbreak if I get glutened badly.

In my case, the DH showed up fairly late (meaning I had other symptoms for years and years before the DH showed up.) I feel like if you have it, it is your body's way of saying okay-- pay attention NOW!

Good luck with your daughter.

Hi, my daughter had something that I think was DH but it was not diagnosed as such since we decided not to do the biopsy. Her's cleared up very nicely after going gluten free. She still has some marks on her legs that are trying to heal and there are a few that have turned out to be scars.

My dd's were red pimple looking things that itched very badly and would errupt into really awful wounds. They were mostly on her inner thigh, bottom and backs of her knees. She has not had a recurrance since going gluten free.

Also, her eczema totally cleared up (and her all over itchy skin) since going gluten free. I can't tell you what a relief it is to not hear that scratching all the time!!

I had both the rashes described and they cleared up completely on the gluten-free diet. First the itching backed off little by little. The rash itself took a couple of months to finish. The discoloration under the skin was the last to go. Now I only have an outbreak if I'm glutened by something I'm consuming every day. Very rarely.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
