Testing For Gluten Intolerance?

If you test negative for Celiacs, is there a test for gluten intolerance? I saw an add for allergy testing & they mentioned food sensitivities. Are they able to test for food intolerances the same way they test for regular allergies?

Advise?

I made an appointment for an allergy test & want to make sure that it's worth it.

Thanks!

Sorry to be a pest but I am hoping for a reply. I'm having an allergy test done tomorrow, but I wanted to know if they can tell if I have gluten intolerance from the test. It's not an allergist that is doing the test, it is actually a chiropractors office. I saw an add for free allergy testing & that they had a new revolutionary treatment for allergies & food intolerances so I made an appointment. It's free so I didn't think it could hurt to go & check it out. I don't plan on continuing there once they find out if I have any food allergies, I just want an answer & don't have the money to go to an allergist.

Please help!

Allergy testing is not the same thing..I'm no expert, but I know that even if your allergy test comes back normal you can still have an intolerance. The same is true for Celiac - it's not "gluten allergy", it's an autoimmune disease.

Have you tried the diet yet? If you feel better on it then you have an answer! :)

From what I've read, "gluten intolerance" doesn't have a definition that is consistent. Taking the most general usage of "something bad happens when I eat gluten", an allergy test can find one of the many ways the human body can react to gluten but not all of them.

Thank you both for your advise. I will probably still go through with the allergy test tomorrow since it's free & see if they find any allergies to food or anything.

I have not tried the gluten free diet. I will probably try it either way next time I get sick & see if it makes a difference. My problem is that I'm not always sick. I'm fine for a few weeks/months & then I get sick for a few weeks in a row.

My doctor did bloodwork for celiacs. My family doctor only did the 2 gliadin tests & nothing else so my GI doctor ordered the other test to go with it. HOPEFULLY I will get the results today.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
