I read that some of the cheaper balsamic vinegars contain caramel coloring which might be a problem, so I'd check the labels carefully. The good stuff ($$$$) should be OK.

Yeah... if you ever head over to Italy, definitely go to Modena and pick up some of the good stuff - the stuff they don't export, except for at prices like $100/100ml. ;-) It's MUCH cheaper there. I brought home a backpack full, and I think we spent about 100 Eu for it all. (Mind you, that's for what will likely be four years worth of good balsamico!)

I would avoid the chepaer stuff simply because it tastes awful and isn't worth buying. Still, I've never heard of a balsamic vinegar with gluten -- caramel color or no caramel color.
