Are My Supplements Safe?

I am taking quite a few Metagenics supplements and am confused about their label. It says they are are formulated to exclude: wheat, gluten, corn protein, soy, nuts, tree nuts, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Yet there is a statement in the bottles that say "This product is produced in a facility that produces products containing soy, dairy, fish and crustacean shellfish". I have an inquiry in to the company but am interested in hearing if others have had luck with their products.

I have a probiotic from Sedona Labs that says the product doesn not contain milk, egg, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat (gluten), peanuts or soybeans. It says some strains are fermented in soy and/or milk. It goes on state that processing eliminates any soy and/or milk residue.

I am wondering if these products are safe. I need to avoid gluten, dairy, soy and eggs. It seems that corn also bothers me but I haven't been tested for that yet. It is essentiall that I take calcium and vitamin d3. I am taking the probiotics as I have a lot of bad bacteria in my gut and am trying to force them out with good bacteria.

I need to start taking a multivitamin/mineral supplement and was hoping to use Metagenics. My doctor said multivitamin/mineral substances are often hard on the stomach so wanted me to stay off them for a while since I am having such stomach issues. I feel I am so malnourished since I'm not aborbing enough nutrients so I feel it is crucial that I start multivitamin/mineral supplements soon.

I see my doctor again next week but just don't seem to be getting anywhere. I made an inquiry at Mayo Clinic about seeing a GI specialist there. He would need to review my medical records first and then it would take a couple months to get an appointment.

Let me know how you like Dr Murray at Mayo!

I found my own answer from Metagenics. It took them a while to respond to my inquiry. This is what I found out.

"Metagenics products are produce in a triple GMP (Good Manufacturing

Practices) facility that follows strict allergen separation guidelines.

While the FDA mandates manufacturers lists allergen statements on

product labels, there is no concern with respect to cross contamination

in our facility as those allergens that you listed are produced on

different machinery in separate parts of our manufacturing facility."

I find this news great. My doctor carries that brand. Only problem is that my system is so sensitive that I react quite severly to a lot of the supplements. Just keep trying different ones to find help for my insomnia and anxiety. I hope to get my vitamin and mineral levels tested. Did that 1/2 years ago. I'm guessing a lot of my levels are even lower now since I haven't know about the gluten intolerance for real long.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
