Question Regarding Ingredients

I've been reading other message boards. Do you call every company regarding ingredient labeling? If my can of peas says "peas, water and salt" - I don't call the company. But if a different label says " peas, dry milk, modified food starch, artifical flavor or color" or something that could be wheat, those are the companies we are supposed to call, isn't that right?

On this other message board, a woman is afraid to eat anything from a grocery store, and she calls every company regardless of what the ingredient list says. I would like to share some info from here, so that she can get over some of her fears and anxieties.

If the ingredient list is as simple as the one you mentioned and from a reputable company, I don't call. If there is ANY doubt about an ingredient, I err on the side of safety and contact the manufacturer. I keep a list of who I have called and the last date I verified gluten-free contents in my notebook. About every six months or so I go back and contact again to be certain that nothing has changed. I also keep the dietician on speed dial on my cell phone for the primary grocery store I use (Kroger) as many of their store brands are gluten-free and they are so good about answering questions. Any answer goes in the notebook for later reference.

Don't forget to keep the same info on any meds you use.

I don't call EVERY company esp. if it's a very simple label with minimal ingredients and a rep. company, but I do keep my cell phone with me in the grocery store in case I have a question while shopping.

Donna, I would love to know which Kroger brand items you've found to be gluten-free... I have called them in the past but was frustrated because they wouldn't provide a list of products, only that I could call on particular items I had questions about. Which kinda sucks if I'm in the store on a Sunday afternoon and their help line people aren't working!

As Donna stated, if the company states as their ingredients "salt, water, beans"...I don't call. However, if there is any doubt about an ingredient, I do call. Is the person from the other message board newly diagnosed? If so, she may be going through initial anxieties. Calling companies may "relieve her mind" until she realizes that it is not necessary. Just my thoughts. -Julie :)

I call almost every company when it comes to canned or processed foods, even if the ingredients are simple, because there is the concern of cross contamination.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
