How Do I Help Mom?

Ok its confirmed- mom has a gluten intolerance. her celiac serology & genetic test were negative but Enterolab results were 15 with 10 being the cutoff for negative; interestingly my result was 20

anyway, she has been struggling with stomach problems all her life, has IBS, diverticulosis, oral lichen planus, thinning hair and fragile teeth and has problems loosing weight.

She is going to "try" the diet and told me she will start after her dinner club on Sunday - i dont know if this is really sinking in but i keep urging her to do a complete elimination of gluten and shes already saying things like "well i just wont eat so much or maybe ill just treat myself on the weekends"

In any case, are there any websites i can send to her that have very basic rudimentary info on going gluten free and what types of foods to avoid, blah, blah?

would appreciate any info

thanks

Most of the info needed will be found on this website but here are a two places that are simple to give her.

Open Original Shared Link disease.php

Open Original Shared Link was also quite useful to me when I was figuring out my own problems.

You could give your mom a copy of "Healthier Without Wheat" by Dr. Stephen Wangen. That book explains all the physical problems and autoimmune conditions, which gluten consumption can cause for people who are gluten intolerant and not following a gluten free diet. It also answers many frequently asked questions about gluten intolerance and the gluten free diet.

Jason- with her thinning hair, trouble losing weight, & gluten intolerance- has she had her thyroid checked?

This new patient packet is free. I've had it sent to relatives.

OK, I see that the link only goes to the storefront. Click on "pamphlets" on the left side. On that page, you'll see a "new patient packet" that lists for $0.00. You can have it sent directly to their(your mom's)address.

It includes a dining card.

This. I think every doctor should give their copy of this book after their diagnosis. Very concise, easy to read, and eye-opening.

Oddly this effect has gone now, just happened yesterday evening, the nerve pain is now back to its usual "unpredictable" random self again - but that was the only time I ever had some mechanical trigger for it, don't know why! There's no (or wasn't) actual pain in my neck - it was inside the leg, but when I looked down, now though, the leg pain just comes and goes randomly as before again.

I had MRI scan a few years ago showing everything normal, and now it's no longer triggering the nerve pain when I bow my head today - it only seemed to happen yesterday, and that was the only time it happened! Just seemed weird as no movement has caused my usual nerve pain before. It's normally just random.

Very good pizzeria with small dining room in back of the restaurant. The owner's daughter has celiac & they have gluten free pizza & a gluten free menu. Some items from the regular menu can be made gluten free also. They have a lunch menu which we ordered from & my chicken with spinach & mozzarella over gluten-free penne was delicious. They also have Tuesday night pasta specials & Thursday night chicken pasta specials. We plan on going back for dinner soon.

@Aretaeus Cappadocia and @Russ H thank you both for your helpful advice and information. I haven't seen a GI in years. They never helped me aside from my inital diagnosis. All other help has come from my own research, which is why I came here. I will be even more careful in the future.

@nancydrewandtheceliacclue, you are welcome. After looking at this thread again, I would like to suggest that some of the other comments from @Russ H are worth following up on. The bird-bread may or may not be contributing to what you are experiencing, but it seems unlikely to be the whole story. If you have access to decent healthcare, I would write down your experiences and questions in outline form and bring this to your Dr. I suggest writing it down so you don't get distracted from telling the Dr everything you want to say while you have their attention.
