Lactose Intolerance: Safe To Eat When Healing?

Hello,

I've always noticed some degree of lactose intolerance but ever since I began a gluten free diet, my symptoms have escalated. I now can't even eat a little yogurt without feeling the aftermath. Can anyone tell me why this might be, and if it is safe to consume dairy if my intestinal lining is damaged? Does it slow healing time?

Thank you!

There are others that could probably answer that but you aren't alone with the yogurt thing. It's been 9 months and I still can't eat yogurt. A small amount of cheese or a small ice cream is ok so don't know what it is with the yogurt - and I love it!

If dairy is bothering you a lot it would be a good idea to hold off on it for a while longer. What brand of yogurt are you consuming? If it is a flavored variety have you tried just plain yogurt that you can add a bit of jam or something to it to flavor? Some of the yogurts now have an awful lot of 'additives' to them including artificial sweeteners that may be a problem for some. Yogurt that is just yogurt might be better tolerated.

It is also possible that you may have a casien intolerance rather than lactose. There isn't much lactose in yogurt.

I'm joining in with the "yogurt intolerance". I can drink milk, eat cheese, but I have to use sour cream instead of yogurt. Even the unhomogenized one makes me stomach sick.

As for the original question, I guess the best thing is to listen to your body. If lactose bothers you, don't eat it. I didn't have any issues with dairy (except that yogurt thing, which started before I went gluten-free), tried avoiding it several times but never noticed any big difference.

I haven't looked into casein vs. lactose and I will--some dairy products (yogurt, ice cream, milk) have more of an effect while I don't notice anything with others (butter, thankfully). As for the type of yogurt, I use plain Nancy's organic, so pretty good on the artificial ingredients front. Thanks for the replies!

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
