blood test results
patty-maguire replied to Shireen32's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You may be a silent celiac or you may be having other symptoms besides the classic stomach issues. I didn't think I had celiac and reluctantly went for the test when my doctor ordered it. Once I learned more I realized a lot of the issues I'd had throughout my life were likely related. Some things to look for: skin rashes, brittle hair and nails, low iron... -
DH is very itchy You mentioned your rash is not so I don’t think it’s that. Removing gluten from your diet shouldn’t cause a rash unless it’s some kind of weird detox affect. I would look to what you’ve added to your diet. Are you eating a lot of gluten-free processed foods? They tend to have more sugar, leaveners, emulsifiers etc than their gluten counterpa...

In a shared kitchen like that I usually give the cups a quick rinse before I use them. I think gluten in a cup is pretty low risk but if you’re worried a rinse won’t hurt.

I guess it's similar but period cramps are really low. Gluten cramps are higher up.

Are Planter's Peanuts Gluten-Free?
patty-maguire commented on Scott Adams's article in Gluten-Free Foods & Beverages
Yes, they are gluten free. Here are the ingredients: INGREDIENTS: PEANUTS, CONTAINS 2 % OR LESS OF SEA SALT, SPICES (CONTAINS CELERY), DRIED ONION, DRIED GARLIC, PAPRIKA, NATURAL FLAVOR, SUGAR, CORNSTARCH, GELATIN, TORULA YEAST, MALTODEXTRIN, DRIED CORN SYRUP. The only "may contain" is tree nuts. According to Celiac Canada, nuts are not a high risk...- 14 comments

As Trents said, you do need to be consuming gluten for the tests to be accurate. They measure the antibodies in your blood. If the trigger (gluten) is not present there would be no antibodies. Same goes for the scope. After 10 years gluten free, any intestinal damage would likely be healed, so the scope would not be accurate. As for whether you...

Ice cream Gluten Free
patty-maguire replied to Jane07's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most ice cream is gluten free, especially the premium brands. Of course check labels to be sure. If Haagen-Dazs is your favorite you're in luck. It's made with cream, milk, eggs and sugar. It's flavors that you need to watch for. Haagen-Dazs tends to keep things pretty simple but of course anything with chunks of cookies or anything like that will be... -
I had issues with plantar warts when I was younger but not since going gluten free. Warts are viruses but who knows if we’re somehow more susceptible. I’ve not seen any studies that correlate warts with celiac or gluten.

Herbs & seasonings
patty-maguire replied to KristieSp5293's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
McCormick and Clubhouse labels can be trusted. All their single herbs and spices are gluten-free. With blends just check the labels to be sure. Re the spices you already have in your pantry, also consider if you may have contaminated them yourself while cooking or baking. I.e, dip the measuring spoon in the flour, wipe it off and dip it in the spice... -
Feels like I can’t eat anything
patty-maguire replied to SargeMaximus's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You're over thinking this and being rude to people who are taking their time to try to help you. A healthy diet is not about measuring micrograms of this or that mineral, it's about eating food. Unless you have labs that say you are deficient or over in a particular nutrient, just eat food. If you think you have an intolerance, gluten or something... -
Underwear protection from sudden diarrhea
patty-maguire replied to Julie E's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
CC is cross contamination. Meaning that you've not directly eaten a gluten containing food but that your otherwise gluten free food has come in contact with gluten and given you a reaction. That's where the risk in restaurant dining comes from. You're right, eating out is difficult, but many of us make it work. I eat out a fair bit with very little... -
Yup, you're absolutely right. Genetic has a lot to do with it and having family members diagnosed is one more indicator that it's likely you have it. I was the same, a little overweight so none of my doctors even thought of celiac. Food sensitivity testing is a bit controversial and not terribly reliable. There are lots of false positives and false...

I second everything trents said with a couple of additions. Re DNA testing, about 30% of people in the US have the genes for celiac but only about 1% actually have the disease, so you’re doing the right thing to go ahead with testing. In addition to potentially cutting back on gluten as suggested, all you can really do is treat the symptoms. Ginger t...

maltodextrin and dairy
patty-maguire replied to Xsmama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Maltodextrin is gluten free even if derived from wheat. Lactose intolerance is common with celiac disease but you only need to eliminate it if it’s causing you digestive upset. You may find this helpful. https://www.naturallygluten-free.com/celiac-and-lactose-intolerance.html -
I take the approach that I don’t expect anything of anyone. I ask if my needs can be accommodated.. if so great. If not I take care of myself. It’s no one else’s responsibility. Perhaps suggest to the school that with all the different dietary needs that they are correct, they can’t accommodate them all so maybe they shouldn’t offer food as a prize. If there...

Gluten free products
patty-maguire replied to Raptorsgal's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think it's important to be clear that the gluten molecule does not pass through the skin. If people choose out of an abundance of caution to choose gluten free skin care that's fine but I do worry about new people who are already overwhelmed getting anxious about skin care. I personally do look for gluten free cosmetics, especially lip gloss, but even... -
First Dr. Visit on the 8th
patty-maguire replied to HiddlePixie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your symptoms certainly scream celiac. You have a few options. 1. Go to the doctor and tell him / her all about your symptoms and ask to be tested for celiac. Doctors these days expect people to google their symptoms so you may not meet the resistance you think. There is more awareness these days of celiac as well. 2. There is an at home test... -
Trying to figure out if my family goes gluten free
patty-maguire replied to alross's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The best and healthiest approach is to focus most of your diet on naturally gluten free whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole fresh cuts of meat, eggs and dairy if tolerated, nuts, seeds, gluten free grains etc. When you do use gluten free products certification provides comfort for sure, but it's not necessary. Certification costs a lot of money... -
Levels of sensitivity
patty-maguire replied to LP023's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I’ve read a lot on this topic and I don’t think there is a good answer, but here are some things to consider: -the 10 - 50 mg I mentioned above is from scientific testing and the consensus is that most people with celiac can tolerate that. - the lady who says she was glutened by her husband laying his cutting board against hers may be correct but... -
Trying to figure out if my family goes gluten free
patty-maguire replied to alross's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The first thing you need to do it’s take a deep breath. You’ve got this! You will make mistakes and it won’t be the end of the world. I’ve been doing this a long time and talked to a lot of people. Most people have a “shared kitchen”. The family cooks and eat mostly gluten-free with some snack and favourites for the family. My husband has his cereal and ... -
Levels of sensitivity
patty-maguire replied to LP023's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ya it’s confusing for sure. Your goal shroud be to get your gluten exposure as close to zero as you can. That said, 20 ppm or 10 - 50 mg per day is considered safe for celiac. At the end of the day you have to decide what you’re comfortable with. You should be getting follow up testing from your doctor annually and that will tell you if what you’re doing... -
Celiac disease is diagnosed by a positive tTg blood test followed up with endoscopy to confirm. I don’t know about the specific test you had, but it doesn’t diagnose celiac disease. This doesn’t mean you don’t have celiac. As you said you weren’t eating much gluten when you had the test so you likely got a false negative. You might con...

Could be the “change in diet” as your dr says. If you’re eating more fibre than your used to it can take a while to adjust. If you’re eating a lot of processed gluten-free products then you could be having trouble with the gums and other additives. Naturally gluten free whole foods are best. Mint tea or ginger tea can help with bloating. Here is some more on...
