  1. Most churches I've been to (we are military and move a lot) offer the option to just cross your arms and receive a blessing, so that's what I've done for the last five years, since I've been dx. However, we saw in small print in the program at Christmas at George Washington's church in VA, that you can ask for gluten-free wafer once you go up, so I was...
  2. Rudi's has a $1 off coupon you can print on their site now, too. I like Udi's and Rudi's, mostly because I have a small kitchen and don't like to use up all my flour blends baking my own bread.
  3. I eat out frequently and hate to say that I've been glutened several times at sushi places, to the point where I don't go anymore. Even watching them right in front of me, some chefs do not speak English and when I tell a translator that when they are cutting the sushi rolls with fake crab and tempura "crunchies" and stuff, I can get sick if they don't use...
  4. I was at the one in Ft. Lauderdale in Dec. 2010, and they said they were working on a gluten-free menu. So, I had a salad. It was funny because my boyfriend's mother insisted on eating there and I had a beautiful and delicious fruit smoothie and a salad--which seemed to make her feel guilty when her giant sandwich arrived with gargantuan pieces of butter...
  5. I was stunned to find a small 'g" signifying the gluten-free items on their menu. The dinner menu show it online, too. We went for Monday night football and then for lunch the next day! They have a bar upstairs with tvs, and there are gooey appetizers and beer and Harpoon cider you can have like regular ppl! There are soups, appetizers like bacon wrapped...
  6. Breakfast IS the easiest. Original House of Pancakes has gluten-free. Here on E Coast Silver Diner has gluten-free Vans waffles. Busboys & Poets has grits that are gluten-free. We often go to mom n pops places and I just do the clean grill or pan talkie talk and no crumbs, clean gloves, clean utensils. I get eggs, omelets, etc. Denny's is easy...
  7. I eat out 2-5x a week. Some interesting findings for me: Italian places are some of the most accommodating. They ALWAYS have steak and seafood (and they would NEVER marinate meat with soy sauce, just olive oil and herbs- if they put butter on it, I say no because of cc with crumbs in butter). They usually have the capresi salad with fresh sliced mozzerella...

    ARCHIVED In N Out

I order a cheeseburger, protein style, with ketchup, mustard, onions, and I think tomato. Fries, too. I REQUEST that they change GLOVES and prepare mine on a clean TRAY and NOT on the counter. I request that they use a clean grill and utensils. If I'm ordering with other people, I order separately so nothing will touch their bun. If I order...
  9. I have to tell ya, I eat out 2-5x a week, and I never eat at Chipotle. I went in once, when my brother was being his selfish self (he is allergic to eggs, seeds, poultry, etc, so we can't go to a chicken place or a salad place, but we can go to places swimming in gluten) and when I saw how fast those people were slapping that stuff together, I saw contamination...
  10. FRANKLY, I avoid Starbucks ever since they came out with that gluten free orange cake or muffin thing and I went to the one by my house and they didn't have it- only certain stores were testing it out. Within a couple weeks, before I had the chance to try another location, they had pulled it, as a failure. If all businesses did that with gluten free stuff...
  11. I've tried a lot of gluten-free pizza in the 5 years I've had celiac, and BJ's is the BEST I've had. I only got to have it once in California when it just came out, days before I moved to the East Coast where I can't get it. The manager came out, without request, and explained the big training all the staff underwent and the separate preparation area...
  12. We moved, so I went to a new eye doctor to replace my eyeglasses. I only have difficulty seeing at night or in the dark or when small writing is backlit, like on a projector. My other eye doctor called it night blindness, about 10 yrs. ago. I don't wear glasses on a daily basis, at work, reading, or in most activities. Just in the dark. If you read...
  13. Been looking for it-- the search for stores on the website isn't accurate. I live in VA and found it at Harris-Teeter. I was SO ecstatic, since I ate them at the celiac conference last May and I know they are really delicious! I don't normally use crisco, but: I. Don't. Care. I want fresh outta the oven, never-frozen, quick and easy, blast-from-the...
  14. Wow. I disagree with most of what this doctor said. A "vegetarian" diet is not good for celiacs. Vegetarian includes whole grains, many of which are akin to POISON to celiacs. Many meats (most unprocessed ones) are NOT bad for celiacs, so why would you cut out meat when your diet is already so limited? This is coming from a vegetarian of 10 years, who...
  15. Just moved to Old Town a few weeks ago. Thanks so much for the tip! Heading there right now! Crepes on a Sunday! Yeah!
  16. In the elevator to our hotel room (the cdf conference in L.A.), a woman commented on the Udi bread she spied sticking out from my bag on the bellman's luggage cart. This was my marine's first clue that "people like ME" were swarming the hotel. My beau learned SO much from the speakers (Dr. Peter Green, Dr. Sheila Crowe, Dietician, Shelley Case, and Cook...
  17. I've also had Wendy's Chili countless times and never reacted. My friend loved their chili so much, he'd buy it to make chili dogs at home with it. I'm never surprised to see the people who don't eat fast food but do waste their time reading threads about it.... I personally travel a lot and am going on a 2 week road trip, so Wendy's has been a lifesaver...
  18. Thanks for posting! Which location did you try? I'm moving to a place that is BJ-less, so now I'm bound and determined to go to BJ's before I move!
  19. I trust you guys more than the restaurant-finders online. Can y'all help me compile a list of places in the Northern Virginia/D.C. area? From the search I did on this site, I already have: Legal Seafoods ... Spartan's Austin Grill ... Maggiano's Bonefish Grill ... Essential Grille (Rte...
  20. Just wondering what would happen if we all organized a day and we all went to restaurants requesting gluten free menus/options? Interesting. There are so many ways it could be done. Obviously, we would go to the "unfriendlies"- the ones that need to hear our roar! And when you actually get starved for food, you could go eat at the "friendlies", lol...

    ARCHIVED In And Out

Definitely request separate bags if you're ordering with glutenous people. I generally do not get sick at In N OUt and I've eaten at several in SoCal and even in Vegas.
  22. My new favorite bread is Udi. I've gotten it at Whole Foods and at Sprout's. It does come in the frozen section, but all you do is thaw the entire loaf and LEAVE IT OUT on the counter all week to eat whenever you want! NO MORE CHISELING!!!! Because it's not frozen and it's like "normal" bread---I take it with me EVERYWHERE. To work. On vacation,...
  23. Yes! I love the Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese. However, the very experienced ladies in my support group believe that celiacs shouldn't eat soy. So, I plan on asking about it at the mega conference in May.
  24. Usually when we go out to Chilis for lunch, all the people I work with get the soup and salad, except for me. (I can't tolerate cream, and I don't even like that cheesy baked potato soup they have.) And, to be fair, I recently posted a minor rant on my blog here about Chilis and how they suddenly took the gluten free honey bbq sauce off the menu (so I couldn...
  25. HI,

This is awesome to hear about the soups. I like the potato soup at chili's, well that was until the other day we found a rubber band in it. Not sure how it got there, but was quite put off by it. Chilis and red robin do also have a great gluten-free menu. Thanks it is always great to find new tips!
